    U.S. and Ukraine sign minerals deal

    It took a long time but it appears they have finally reached a deal with Ukraine. Hope this leads to an end to the war in Ukraine.

    How will this end the war? If anything, if we think we are getting paid back we are free to throw more money at it.

    Perhaps it will. Russia will get significant amounts of Ukrainian territory, the USA will ostensibly get large amounts of revenue from Ukrainian mineral rights.

    It's just winning all around, right? Kinda like two old buddies got together and if they didn't design it this way, well at least they designed the ending.

    I wonder who should be next?

    I’m skeptical but reserve judgement. I can think of worse things in terms of keeping US skin in the game by sharing in mineral rights.

    Russia has rejected the current situation in which they get basically everything they want - I think because they think there’s even more to be had. The way to end it to pressure them militarily so throwing more money to Ukraine could actually help end the war.

    Just the people that finance and supply the American war machine. Hard to view this as not leveraging them for resource extraction.

    As I understand it, most of the precious minerals lie in what is now Russian territory and Putin has already told Trump Russia would be happy to sell said minerals to the US.

    On the surface it’s a good thing, esp with the stern warning towards Russia. At least it means we ostensibly are backing Ukraine.

    But in practice not sure it means particularly much. Words vs actions. We badgered an invaded country into giving up some minerals to keep defending them (or not? if more military aid doesn’t flow).

    I know some had the crazy idea we’d send in some civilian miners from U.S. to Ukraine and that would miraculously end the war by their mere presence. I just don’t see that happening, not just the “miraculously ending the war” part but the very idea of sending miners into an active war.

    At least it gives the Chump administration cover to support the war by claiming it’s an investment. A future president can wave the ransom.

    I'm certain we benefit either way. A Putin-friendly Vichy government would honor the deal too.

    I think Trump, or his ventriloquist's dummy, JD, probably used some kind of line similar to the Chief of Police in Animal House;

    "Look, these parades you throw are very expensive. You using my police, my sanitation people, and my Oldsmobiles free of charge. So, if you mention extortion again, I'll have your legs broken."

    Animal House?

    I had no idea you had a sense of humor Jo.

    You can take your hand out of my ass anytime now Carmine!
