I agree. When I read it I wondered if the author realizes how close the Bahamas are to Florida. Not to mention Cuba, just 90 miles from my hometown, Key West. I think Trump, with this absolutely ridiculous EO, is sucking up to the Catholics and the Italians.
It's official name of the holiday is and has always been Columbus Day. Some states refer to the holiday as Indigenous Peoples Day but that's not Trump's call. For every Federal purpose the name was never changed. His EO is a meaningless stunt. Next he will issue an EO declaring Christmas a federal holiday as part of the conservative media's war against the mythical war against Christmas. FYI Christmas is and has always been a federal holiday.
Well, he did get people saying Merry Christmas again. All by himself. I mean, no one was saying it and just POOF!, he changed all that. Remember?
Populism is just so annoying. Constant things like this that add 0 value to our lives, but makes his base happy simply due to it irritating the people they hate. Just so discouraged that so many Americans can be duped like this.
I mean no one says he landed in the United States. He landed in the new world. Bahamas, Haiti, Cuba, Central America, Northern parts of South America. No one thinks he landed on Myrtle Beach.
You think that a post on Truth Social about a divisive historical figure is going to bond our nation together by tradition? Columbus is controversial which is why the red hats love him so much.
Reading is fundamental. “In a separate proclamation on Columbus Day, Biden praised the role of Italian Americans in U.S. society, but also referenced the violence and harm Columbus and other explorers of the age brought about on the Americas.”
First it's a well written respectful acknowledgement of indigenous people. You should read the link below. Its great. Second, and here is the part... he declared and actual DATE an indigenous day, so even if you didnt like the proclamation to recognize indigenous people because you hate them, its ok. 2025 is not proclaimed. Its was not proclaimed a federal holiday, which he cant do, only congress can. Trump can proclaim next Sunday, Ice Cream Sundae Day, and you wouldnt mind. But call on recognizing people you for some reason hate... that's crazy. Notice there is zero elimination of murderous Columbus Day glorifying the finding of a cool ass vacation spot outside the US? It isn't a fact. The holiday has never changed.names. Never. The fact that some believe it just proves the lefts claim that Trump has cultish believers
What is your favorite Columbus Day tradition? The funny thing is 99.99% (including conservatives all gung ho about it… don’t do a damn thing to actually celebrate Columbus Day). It’s just total culture warrior BS where it’s not even about Columbus, it’s because in their own minds they think it’s “owning da libz” to poo-poo indiginous people. Exact reason the same people wanting to “protect our traditions” for Columbus Day would cancel MLK day or black history. Is it even actually big with Italians? I’m a northern yankee, did a stint in NYC and don’t remember it being a big deal - although supposedly the Italians have parades (so maybe a thing mostly in the Little Italy neighborhoods in some cities? I don’t particularly remember). Maybe some Italian-Americans would be legit offended if it were rescinded as a federal Holiday, otherwise seems to be a bunch of nonsense either way.
The truth is that without the lack of immunity of native Americans to smallpox and without the charity of one group of natives in Cape Cod, the European invasion of north America might have been delayed for a couple centuries, if not more. European ships reported campfires up and down the east coast as far as the eye could see, and they were afraid to send a landing party.
