UF makes the NYT for all the wrong reasons. Something UF is doing regularly these days. Basically, a full scholarship Jewish female student at UF gets expelled for being at a protest over UF support for the Israeli government couched in accusations of "disruption". Rest of article is about how young American Jews are having their "Jewishness" questioned with crackdowns on Jewish advocacy with examples all across America at Universities. The state later dismissed her case. The University of Florida, however, had already banned her from campus. University officials had warned protesters that they could be punished if they violated tough new restrictions on protest. Administrators also said that officers had instructed the demonstrators to disperse. Ms. Segal said it was too loud to hear that directive. Ms. Segal told me that she was barred from taking her final exam of the semester and participating in a school-sponsored summer program to which she had been admitted. A university disciplinary committee ruled that she had not acted in a disruptive manner but deemed her responsible for violating university policy, among other things. They proposed a one-year suspension. The university’s newly installed dean of students went further. In a letter shared by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, he declared that Ms. Segal’s conduct “caused major disruption to the normal functions of the university and prevented law enforcement officers from performing their duties promptly” and boosted her suspension to three years. (The university would not officially confirm or comment on events surrounding Ms. Segal’s suspension, pointing out that it’s protected information under privacy laws.) The University of Florida requires any student absent for more than three semesters to reapply for admission. Ms. Segal said she had been on a full scholarship. She now works in food service and doesn’t know how or when she’ll return to college. In an era in which students without U.S. citizenship are snatched off the street by federal agents, Ms. Segal’s punishment may seem comparatively mild. But her case contains a special irony. Ms. Segal is Jewish.

I could not agree more. So many of the things that we have taken for granted (and are essential to our democracy) are under attack at the same time.
Citizens being deported, legal residents being thrown in jails in foreign country prisons that we pay for, students kicked out of school or deported due to political speech, and political figures, law firms and other entities bowing in deference. If it weren’t for my family and extended family I’d consider moving to another country. Seriously.

When you start throwing Jewish Students in jail and call them “anti-Semitic” you’d think that would cause some to take a step back and look at what they are doing.

That really generalizes what is happening. It’s a specific kind of speech that’s being punished and it’s directed at the state of Israel. A lot of people who should know better are making bets with fascists that it stops there because they support Israel. Not saying that's you, but that is what is happening.
Not just 'people,' literally the government and institutions adopting and codifying that idea, on a bipartisan basis.

The administration literally changed the rules so they could do this to these people, it wasn't some long standing thing they had punished people for in the past. Shit people have posted here about how they occupied buildings at UF back in the day during the Vietnam era.

Look you can say she still knowingly broke their new rules they made just for these protests, but they still decided to arbitrarily add even more time to her suspension after the fact, just because. Thats the especially egregious part. Clearly trying to make examples of people.

They used to be against hate speech laws that stopped them from saying racist stuff, because their principle was being racist, not free speech
I imagine all movements include a mix of ideologically pure and corrupt members. Eg the fight for restricting alcohol sales on Sundays included both baptists and bootleggers. Interestingly, one of the key moments in this hate speech / free speech fight was the Nazi demonstration in Skokie IL that was defended by the left more than the right. I think conservatives of the time were more connected to WWII and were not interested in giving Nazis any voice. Indeed the 1980s saw the right as a passionate advocate of open borders and the left pushing for keeping our immigrants. I think either side can get pulled into defending a variety unfortunate perspectives if their group adopts that perspective. See the right’s defense of the J6 rioters, which would have been unthinkable just 10 years earlier.
