I'm not sure this is inherently political but I'm sure there are some political arguments to be made. Not sure how accurate the series may or may not be, but it certainly makes the FDA and lots of doctors, sales reps, and others look bad. Matthew Broderick plays Richard Sackler, who's a particularly unlikable character. I get the power of greed, but it's almost hard for me to imagine these people were as one-dimensional and horrible as portrayed. Painkiller (TV Mini Series 2023) ⭐ 7.5 | Crime, Drama The causes and consequences of America's opioid epidemic unfold in this drama following its perpetrators, victims and an investigator seeking the truth.
some of the most destructive drug dealers ever, and the FDA turned a blind eye to the volumes going to the worst areas. doctors, sales reps, all of em should be in jail. opiod addiction fed into fentanyl and has killed too many. legalize weed and cut the opiod addiction
There are going to be a lot of similarities with the opioid epidemic and Covid… I have not watched it yet. But curious.
Similar to "Dopesick" and makes Sackler seem like an over the top heavy. Agree w/ G8tr above: the reach of these drugs hurt a higher number of people than any Colombian cartel could only dream of reaching. It's the classic: low level criminal deals drugs and is busted for 1/2 ounce of cocaine and gets 20 years. white collar criminal deals drugs and has movies made about him...socially ostracized but still intact with billions. Same with money: Real Estate crash in '08-'09, Crypto, etc. who has gone to jail? Hmmmm..no one.
I read Patrick Redden Keefe's book. Was not impressed with Dopesick on Hulu. This one got bad reviews. FDA regulatory capture
When I got hit by a car and needed an operation on my pelvis I specifically told my doctor not to prescribe me Oxycontin... I got something that worked great but was not anything like that highly addictive drug.
It almost feels a little cartoonish to me, but it's also been fast-paced and entertaining. Definitely taking the details with a grain of salt. Oh, and West Duchovny is now on my radar, so there's that, too.
I'm sure she's talented, but like Maya Hawke and Hannah Einbinder, nice to know there is no nepotism in Tinseltown
Interesting read on why hospital patients are prescribed pain meds, more powerful than crack cocaine, but most do not continue to crave them after they are discharged … https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai...Ewj7kOfgrICBAxUVUTUKHW2iDl4Qwg96BAgBED4&nis=8
My ortho prescribed Oxy for my ACL reconstruction a couple years ago. Took one and threw the rest in the trash.
I loved oxy after my knee surgery. It was a life saver. I just didn't take it as prescribed. I typically don't have an addictive personality however I set specific rules for myself anyway. I only took one before I went to bed because I would wake from pain otherwise. In the morning I took one to start the day since I was somewhat active as rehab starts almost immediately so the pain and inflammation would heat up if I didn't. I skipped my middle dose and I generally took a complete day off in between because I didn't want to become dependent and honestly, one oxy with a cup of black coffee didn't give me a "high" but damn, all was right with the world. Just a genuine good mood and disposition towards life. So I cut out one third of the dose and took a day off every 3rd day.
Sometimes those nepo-babies are very talented. Thinking of Jamie Lee Curtis, Carrie Fisher, Drew Barrymore, Amanda Plumber, The Gyllenhaals, Zoe Kravitz, John David Washington, Margaret Qualley, Zoe Kazan and Jack Quaid to name a few. Quite a few from the director/screenwriter world; Sofia and Roman Coppola, Joss Whedon, David Fincher and Duncan Jones.
All true. Just much harder if you aren’t nepo. My daughter still harbors some ambition of being a screenwriter. The industry can feel very closed
It could be me giving the intro to one of the episodes. A Jax doctor overpresribed the hell out of this drug for my Dad. He died in 2016 at the ripe old age of 53. Oh and I thought Duchovny was terrible. I didn't know who she was until this thread, but her poor acting really stuck out.
The strategic nature of the drug companies hiring the FDA and DEA folks who were causing them problems is far reaching . Getting rules passed to ban Federal surveillance of pain clinics without approval from HQ. Congress lobbying, junkets, etc. just staggering. But it probably applies to a zillion things. I think at one point, Florida was Rx more than the other 49 combined. But hippa you know. When a pain clinic doesn’t take insurance and is owned by non doctors…. Hmmmm Refusing to act for so many years that it became cultural. Now trying to clamp down making it difficult for chronic patients. Now talk about how this paved the way and created addicts for fentanyl.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well, check that. I enjoyed how well made it was. The subject matter was painful to watch.
