Kid went missing 8 years and was found last week ... now police say it was lie

    Rudy Farias: A Texas man reported missing as a teen 8 years ago has been at home with his mom all along, police say | CNN

    This story caught my attention a few days ago, seemed like a somewhat good ending to an awful situation. Mom claimed a kid went missing 8 years ago, but was found "badly abused" and unable to communicate at a church a few days ago. Made it sounds like someone kidnapped him, abused him for years, and then dumped him off ...

    Police say it was all a lie, and the kid was only missing for one day in 2015, then returned home the next day. He was at home living with his mother the whole time, while his mother made false reports.

    I don't know, there were even billboards made over the years asking for information about his disappearance. Mom liked the attention?

    Isn't using a gofundme for fraudulent purposes illegal? if so, prosecute her to the fullest extent of the law.

    And this 'kid' is 25.

    At some point since achieving legal adulthood, he likely stumbled upon guilty information. If that's established, perhaps they ought to consider looking into him as a co-conspirator.

    I was feeling really bad for the kid based upon the picture. If I'm reading the article correctly, he was 17 when the lie began. Minors are charged with crimes all of the time, and at 17, he was old enough to know what was going on unless there's more to the story such as mental illness on his part, for example.

    My guess is the mom enjoyed the attention when her son went missing and wanted to keep it going. Otherwise. I have no clue

    Although I’m not sure why someone would donate money to a woman who loses a child. Children are a substantial financial burden - losing one sure as shit isn’t gonna be a hit financially. I have two so I know.

    You are right… I’m assuming (and that can be dangerous) the financial donations where to help with private investigators, billboards, etc…

    And if this “kid” was truly 17 when this all went down.. he is an agility as the mom. Go after both of them.
    People seem to be willing to do ANYTHING for attention and or money. Truly messed up.

    What really happened to Rudy Farias? (msn.com)

    This says the kid was in on it, pretended to be the mother's nephew, used a fake name, and even interacted with the police under the fake name during their investigation. Although it notes a local "activist" in the area claims the kid was drugged and held captive. That doesn't appear to be true because neighbors say they saw him and knew as the nephew.

    Also says the mom used the story for fund raising, including a trip to Mexico after claiming he was being held for ransom there.

    Hard to believe no one realized it was the "missing" kid the whole time, but I guess you give parents the benefit of doubt in situations like this.
