Let me elaborate, since someone decided to “come on man” my post. The fact they were giving him oxygen meant he was still viable at the time. THAT is the good news I was referring to. Had it been a situation like Dale Earnhardt, where the ambulance drove slowly with no urgency, that would be a much worse indication of condition.

Yes Sir, Dale was gone before his car came to rest.

The old policy for race tracks is that you didn't want to declare a driver dead until they reached the hospital. This was to prevent the race track from being declared a crime scene.

I worked a Sportsman race in 1996 when a driver was killed. They red flagged the race to collect pieces of him (his head) off the track, but he was declared dead at the hospital.

Nobody was screaming and demanding the game be canceled. A player got seriously injured and I think the players decided not to finish a game.

I think the difference here vs. other severe injuries was the CPR, the necessity of CPR takes it to a different level. Can’t recall ever seeing that in an NFL game. With gruesome leg injuries there’s never a question about continuing. Even if a guy has a spinal injury they are often conscious and can possibly give the thumbs up.

If a guy is getting CPR it basically means he’s dead, but for that short window to resuscitate, without immediate CPR they stay dead. So what all those players witnessed was their lifeless teammate having emergency workers perform resuscitation on him. This is totally different from a more typical “injury”, even when guys get knocked out or concussed badly they don’t require CPR.

Very similar to Keyontae who may not be here without that Cardiologist in the stands to deliver quick lifesaving measures (and I thought it was totally reduculous it was left to the players to finish that game).

I saw reports it took 9 minutes of CPR in this case - or at least that’s how long before he was in the ambulance, and the ambulance didn’t leave for 30 minutes from the incident. Not sure how that timing compares. I remember Keyontae was very touch and go for at least 24+ hours. Sounds like it’s basically same deal, he’ll be put in an induced coma and possibly therapeutic hypothermia. It sounds promising if they are saying his vitals are returning (I don’t think we got that word on Keyontae until well into the next day), but it might take that 24 hours until they bring him out to know for sure if he will fully recover.

They had to cancel the game simply because neither team wanted to finish the game. They stood there for an hour watching a player fighting for his life and it's really difficult to just get back into the game without pretty much going through warmups. It would have been another 30 minutes before they started so you are looking at over 90 minutes since they stopped the game. Why risk further injury?

How much money did you have on this game? Needed some fantasy points?

    Just incredible, man.

Without a doubt. There is nothing worse than watching a loved one, coworker, friend or even stranger die in front of you.

And that's what was happening, until it wasn't.

I am responding to only because you quoted me.

Sierragators first 3 posts in his thread were about canceling the game. Oldgstor linked a tweet stating to cancel the game "NOW", and scooter was screaming to cancel the game.

    Quotes below.

They are certainly entitled to their opinion and scream it from the rooftops. But the fact is plenty of people in here were screaming it.

I don't gamble or do fantasy football.

Don't see why its so unreasonable to wait a bit and see how the oung man is doing. Didnt once suggest they should resume the game and didn't say they should not cancel. Went back over every pos of mine in this thread and everyone has been consistent.

Wait uuntil they know a little more about his condition, then make the call. That has somehow morphed into drag the guy off the field and play ball. Never said, never implied.

There was no way they were playing with how long it took to get his heart beating and get him in the ambulance. Not unless they got him fully conscious before the ambulance pulled away, but sounds like from reports they only got his pulse back but he needed life support for oxygen. The NFL apparently wanted to give them 5 minutes after the ambulance was off the field. Players had none of it. But that was the only window, once they went back to the locker rooms it was never happening.

I thought it was odd how long it took to make it official. The players must have known earlier as some of them had already showered. ESPN handled it horribly, basically 90% commercials and going to the studio talking heads with nothing to say. I guess there is no good way to handle it, but seems like they weren’t prepared and weren’t well coordinated with the NFL.

I agree. I figured it was done when they went to the locker room and since there was no weather issue to put them in the locker room .I thought they knew on the field he died.

I think all the players were thinking he died based on their reactions, technically if CPR was being performed and no pulse/breathing then in a way he was dead for a few minutes on the field.

I don’t think the vast majority of players are going to play a game in any sport if a guy “maybe” just died on the field. Other than maybe really old school motorsports where deaths were frequent, almost anything gets red flagged immediately. I honestly couldn’t believe it when we resumed after the Keyontae incident not knowing his status, and likewise in that case he easily could have passed and didn’t likely gain consciousness while in the arena
(maybe not until they finally took him out of induced coma days later). But in that case they left it up to the kids to play, pretty cowardly of the adults. In this case it was pretty clear the players would not be playing.

Looking back at it, I'm pretty sure the kids decided to play because they felt that was expected of them.

Sad that the adults couldn't protect them in that situation. I believe that trauma is something that those players are still dealing with.

Football is just different. Violence against the other team is part of the game. How could you possibly continue in football? It’s just different. I could see guys not wanting to ever play again.
