I agree. However, to the point of differentiating white versus black people using the word:
    - If someone called my brother a s&ithead, I'd have fought them. But I can call him that.

Plenty of cultures have different levels of scrutiny on behavior for those inside and those outside. Is it not surprising, given the history of rape, slavery, and discrimination in this country, that black folks might be a wee bit more sensitive to this coming from a white person.

Again, I agree with the general statement that nobody should use the word. But I also get that some black people feel differently - that when spoken "inside the culture/family" it does not carry the same derogatory meaning. Funny why a few white people seem to care a lot about their ability to use this word without being confronted about their intentions in choosing to use it....

It shouldn’t have to be explained to any reasonable adult in 2022 why it’s 1. Not ok for anyone to use that word and 2. Why it’s MUCH worse for someone white to use it. I find it hilarious that when anyone talks about equality or equity bigots say “we don’t need any of that”… but bring up the n word and it’s “ how comes its one person can say it but not another? That’s a double standard. What about equality?” lol. It has way too much history for anyone white to use it. Even with a soft R rapping along to a song… it’s widely known among young people that your white friends Better mute themselves when the n word comes on. Everyone knows that. It’s not “free speech” to use hateful language. I don’t think he was using it in a hateful way but it doesn’t matter. Also/ stop trying to rap. Nobody thinks you should rap. Not you, not Kadarious Toney… no athlete should ever rap. It’s awful. Stop thinking you’re Lil Wayne. You look ridiculous.

now, I don’t think anyone should use that word. it’s derogatory and I don’t buy the argument that black people are “taking the power back out of the word by co-opting it”. But that’s up to them to decide not me. That’s the thing- theyget to decide what works.

Having said all that/ this is NOT justice. The kid made a mistake- his life shouldn’t be altered by it. Especially if he wasn’t using it in a bigoted way.

What should happen here is the team decides. Let young people- young black men.. decide what they want for their team. Not old pc -scared people. That’s not ok. I don’t even think people believe in what they’re fighting for anymore. The point of “being woke” is to do what’s right. Do what’s equitable… NOT what makes you look good or what won’t get you cancelled. The left ruins their own causes by doing stuff like this.

For all you who don't get it. Blacks using the N word is about OWNERSHIP of it for the horrors of their past. It is not the same for a white guy to use it because a Black guy does. Double standard is the fact that Blacks have lived on the wrong side of a double standard for the whole of U.S. history.

I think context matters. He was singing lyrics of a song. He wasn't demeaning someone. He wasn't verbally attacking anyone. I don't think the former is an offense that should cost a scholarship.

The bigger lessen here is quit publishing your every move on social media.

A public song made to make $$$$ is not inside the family. We can’t play that crap on the radio and then be outraged if a white person sings it

I agree privately it can be used among black individuals at times. Never with white people

As a black man you raise a legitimate point. Everything comes down to intent. What was his purpose? If it was not to be derogatory towards blacks then the actions taken is unwarranted.

the fact that a black player can say it under any circumstances opens the door for litigation in my opinion.

I'm not sure why you quoted me. I said I agree folks should not say it.

Superficially, your point seems to be that if something is played on popular media then it must be fair game for all? So, if a recruit sings about rape, screwing minors etc, it should be accepted by UF? I disagree. I think you do too.

I believe you stated your point incorrectly by comparing the radio/media to this kid saying something. Correctly stated I believe the question is whether a white kid and a black kid are held to different standards in saying that word. That is a fair question. Most understand that they are and it reflects the long history of our country and the "inside the family" versus outside that I discussed.

Also, do we really know this is "why" his scholly was pulled? I doubt our coaches have said exactly why they took action, so what is the truth? If they did take his scholarship based on just that singing, I disagree that a white kid should be held to a different standard by UF and our coaches. I'm guessing that there is more going on here with stokes than just this (look at recruiting board).

Nobody should act righteous here. Black people who use that word should not overreact when white people do. Likewise, white people have to understand that their use of the word IS different because of both past and current real racism. So, nobody should say it (or maybe everybody should say it and just completely defang the word, but then would people get outraged over?).

good question. We probably would not have pulled the offer as it would never have been reported. Many blacks get a pass using the word so if it’s not racist when blacks it, how is it racist when others use it?? It’s one or the other.

Has to be someone currently on Scholly.

Disparate Response to same behavior would indicate discrimination.

I have black friends and family on both sides of this. Some hate it's use and some use it freely. It's been explained to me that from a certain perspective using that word and normalizing it amongst themselves takes the power of the word away when it's being used as a means to diminish them. I'm not black and I accept this as a point of view that some hold.

I'm not out here fighting to be able to use the word so I'm perfectly fine with people doing what they feel is best for them and their own fight. Of all the compromises we can make as a society not using this word unless you're a black person is one I can make. Whether I feel they should use it or not.

This kind of faux leftist culture war crap always fails, usually quickly, because no one can ever be righteous enough, and it ends up eating itself. Remember Robespierre ended up losing his head too!!

The most surprising element here is there are those who are perfectly OK allowing songs to even have the N word as part of the lyrics.....

If the word is THAT offensive....why even allow it to be in a song in the first place?

He knew the lyrics and decided to film himself rapping and then put it on social media. Does this reflect someone who is making good decisions, and we would want to potentially lead the team?

Not going to even enter the use of the word by various people.

Will stick to the kids decision making process.

Hope he lands somewhere and can move past it and learn actions have consequences.

Has "PAPA"Stokes issued a public statement? He has been on Podcasts about UF, his son, and has made himself somewhat available to social media. I hope he speaks on this very regrettable situation?
