    Orlando.... Again
    5 years in Florida.

The crime of Possession of Cannabis Concentrates is a Third Degree Felony and punishable by up to five (5) years in prison, five (5) years of probation, and a $5,000 fine.

    Change the law

I understand there's a difference here because she brought it in but as far as how their citizens would be treated I found this. Possession of up to 6 grams (or two grams of hasish) is an administrative offense, punishable by a fine or detention of 15 days. Possession of larger amounts is a criminal offense.

"The basics of Russian cannabis law go something like this: cannabis is illegal. However, not unlike other countries, a personal use amount is decriminalized, in this case, up to 6 grams of marijuana, or two grams of hash.

This is considered only an administrative offense, and is punishable by a fine or short detention period (of about 15 days). This is laid out in Article 228 of the Russian Criminal Code. Though this doesn’t meet exact decriminalization standards as they apply in other places, it does give a much-lessened punishment to those who are using cannabis personally."How the Ruskey’s do Cannabis - A Look At Regulation in Russia

Adding the caveat that this is an excerpt from the website of a law firm specializing in the representation of defendants accused of drug crimes, if Griner possessed the cannabis concentrate in Florida she would have been able to assert a valid defense considering she had a prescription for the drug.
    Prescription Defense
It is a defense to the crime of Possession of Cannabis Conentrates if the cannabis concentrate was lawfully obtained from a practitioner or pursuant to a valid prescription or order of a practitioner while acting in the course of his or her professional practice. [9]

Importantly, the Prescription Defense is not only available to the cannabis concentrate prescription holder but also any individual authorized by the cannabis concentrate prescription holder to hold the medication on his or her behalf. [10]

And if she was charged by the feds trying to free her it wouldn't matter.

Griner isn't special. Change the law.

Maybe it's just me but I suspect that a lot of the people who are taking the position "if you commit the crime you do the time" regarding Brittney Griner would feel differently if the accused was "Bobby Griner" a straight white male from a small town in the South.

You cited the Florida statute. Although the prohibition against possession of cannabis is still illegal under Federal law the statute is virtually never enforced against individuals who have valid prescription and most likely never enforced in states where possession is legal regardless of the reason for possession.

That is infact my point as well. From the opposite perspective. If y'all wanna free her so bad, change the law.

I'm about to fly from orlando to Detroit with 200mg of edibles. (Medical)

I empathize, HARD, but change the law or pound sand.

    “Up to”

On a first offense, a celebrity who can afford a good lawyer isn’t getting 5 years. That’s the max. You rarely get max sentencing on a first offense with a small amount.

Considering that she has been playing in Russia for several years I have to wonder if she had been bringing the cannabis extract into the country before and the authorities had been ignoring her behavior in past seasons and only decided to enforce the law this time because of the impending (at the time) Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Clearly y'all have never gone to jail for possession.

It's cool to be like judges won't do this or that. Judges can do w/e the hell they want within the law.

Change the law and we can bring griner back.

If you won't hold our politicians to their promises they've made on this subject, but think Griner needs special treatment you need a long hard look in the mirror.

    Change. The. Law.

Then we can talk about how Russia is grand standing or railroading or w/e.

Until then let the reality of hundreds of people a day being incarcerated in the United States FOR THE SAME CRIME keep you up.

Unfortunately Trump is not going away but DeSantis will be the Prez on "24. Yes, she broke the law, our border needs to be closed yes because people can migrate here LEGALLY, Just ask almost any lib "what is a woman" and they might want to either kill you or give you a 50 word non answer. We are beyond being peaceful in this country to each other. One side just wants their freedom and be left alone while the other side wants to cram mental disorders and Marxism down our throats...yeah no peace until one side is completely destroyed or we split up the country.

The only reason the Russians are using Griner as a bargaining chip is because the US initiated the offer. Otherwise she would remain where she is. According to all accounts the US made the first move not Russia.

U.S. Teacher Held in Russia for 'Large Scale' Drug Smuggling
A U.S. teacher was arrested in a Moscow airport with marijuana and is being held for "large scale" drug smuggling, Russian authorities said on Thursday amid soaring tensions with Washington.

Marc Fogel was detained while passing through customs when trained dogs reacted to his luggage, the Interior Ministry said.
