This is for the folks who are stating that Mullen was doing a decent job at recruiting based on the rankings, but the devil is in the details. Since 2018, only 13 players that were in the top 300 in their recruiting class have been big contributors at Florida. Granted Mullen did pull in some very good transfers, but we really need much more contribution from top 300 recruits going forward.

    Color coding
Blue - 10 total since 2018 - Currently on roster and expected to be a big part
Green - 3 total since 2018 - Major contributor and drafted
Orange - 17 total since 2018 - Currently on roster but unsure of what contribution will be in 2022
Red - 12 total since 2018 - Transferred out, behavior issues, etc.

2018 - top 300 players - 11 - 3 major contributor still on team, 2 players drafted, 1 who remain to be seen, 5 transferred out

Jacob Copeland WR - had big potential but ended up transferring to Maryland
Richard Gouraige OL - will be big part of our OL this year
Emory Jones QB- we all know this story, ended up transferring to Az St.
Justin Watkins WR - never played a down, in and out of jail
Kyle Pitts TE - Best TE we've ever had
Amari Burney ILB - Lots of experience albeit under Grantham.
Trey Dean S - Same as with Burney
    Dameon Pierce RB -
Lucas Krull TE - Transferred to Pitt in 2020, had promising start but didn't do much in 2019.
Andrew Chatfield DE - Transferred to Oregon St. in 2021
David Reese OLB - Still on team but hasn't contributed much after injury in 2020

2019 - top 300 players - 10 - 2 major contributors still on team, 1 player drafted, 3 players who contributions remain to be seen, 4 players transferred out

Chris Steele CB - Transferred to USC, never played a down for UF
Kaiir Elam CB - Beast and drafted to NFL
Khris Bogle DE/LB - Never lived up to potential at UF, transferred to Mich St at end of 2021 season
Ty'Ron Hopper LB - Same as with Bogle, transferred to Missouri after 2021 season
Keon Zipperer TE - Thought he would step up in 2021 but had a disappointing season. Remains to be season how his 2022 shakes out.
Mohammoud Diabate LB - Same as with Bogle and Hopper, Transferred to Utah after 2021 season
Lloyd Summerall DE - Hasn't contributed much thus far. Is this his year to take the next step?
Nay'Quan Wright RB - Will be a major part of our RB rotation
Jaelin Humphries DT - Didn't play in a game in 2021. Remains to be seen what 2022 brings for him.
Michael Tarquin OT - Will be a major part of our OL this year.

2020 - Top 300 Players - 11 - 4 major contributors still on team, 5 still on team who have yet to become major contributors - 2 transferred out

Gervon Dexter DL - Expect big things from Mr. Dexter this year.
Derek Wingo LB - Lot's of potential. I hope Wingo takes that next step this year.
Xzavier Henderson WR - Should be a big part of our WR rotation
Jahari Rogers CB - Transferred to SMU before 2021 season
Jaquavion Fraziars WR - Showed some flashes. Big target and we need him to take that next step.
Issiah Walker Jr OT - Transferred to Miami
Ethan Pouncey CB - Hasn't done much so far at UF.
Antuan Powell DL - Had a sack and TFL last year but not much else.
Anthony Richardson QB - If AR stays healthy this year every game on our schedule is winnable
Princely Umanmielen DL - Showed some flashes last year but hasn't been a major contributor yet. The coaches love the kid and I am rooting for him to have a big year.
Josh Braun OL - Started in 7 games last year and another guy we will need badly in 2022.

    2021 - Top 300 players - 10 - 1 expected to be a major contributor, 8 who have yet to become major contributors - 1 transferred out
Jason Marshall CB - Showed some flashes in his first season. I think he becomes a stud under the new coaching staff.
Scooby Williams DL - Played in 4 games and redshirted last year
Tyreak Sapp DL - Didn't play in any games, redshirted
Corey Collier S - Played in two games, redshirted
Carlos Del Rio-Wilson - Transferred to Syracuse
Marcus Burke WR - Played in three games, redshirted
Donovan McMillon S - Saw action in all 13 games, but didn't tally many stats
Yousef Mugharbil OL - Didn't play in any games, redshirted
Daejon Reynolds WR - Played in one game, redshirted
Diwun Black LB - Played in ten games but didn't record many stats. I hope Mr. Black takes a big leap forward in 2022. Love the guy.

I think it's fair to say that Mullen was not a great talent evaluator. However, I see one flaw with the numbers here. They include kids that transferred out after the 2021 season. This was not in Mullen's control and came after he was unceremoniously fired. I think a more fair analysis would be to exclude the '21 transfers.

For this year, it would have been nice to keep Hopper and Diabate. It wasn't meant to be, but I feel like our defense looks so much better with those 2 and Miller returning. Oh well

Agreed with Burney returning too we would be looking really strong at LB rather than praying Miller doesn't miss any time due to injury.

Hopper was clearly the best LB on the field after Miller went down. As for Bogle, every time I saw him play, he produced. I'm not sure why he couldn't get on the field more consistently. Maybe it was just too deep of a position the last couple of years.

Yes, agreed. I hope Burney improves under this new coaching staff. Other than him and Ventrell we don't have much game day experience. We need Derek Wingo, Diwun Black, Chief Borders, and David Reese to really come on this year.

It also stings more because we play Diabate week 1 and Hopper went to Mizzou. They both flew around and made plays last year, seems like both had multiple double digit tackle games. Hopper had some big games late.

Diabate had 2 double digit tackle games and Hopper had 1 (against Missouri no less). The guys we lost due to transfer, draft or graduation accounted for over 300 tackles. We're definitely going to have growing pains on D but I expect us to look better and more sound overall. It will be exciting to see which new guys step up.

I will quibble a bit about your orange and blue, because it isn't real clear as guys like Braun, Zipperer, Fraziars, Umanmielen, Powell, and Humphries are in a similar boat but with different colors. They all will have to play. They will be a big part of the team, barring injury, but it is uncertain what their contribution will be. Braun is the 6th guy right now on the OL, so not a starter, and Zip is likely a starter unless he fizzles, but Zip is listed as uncertain (orange), while Braun is a big part (blue). Not sure how the color scheme works.

Two things that have caught my eye are the transfers, which there is not much to blame on Mullen because the transfer portal is crazy, but he had a significant amount of injured recruits that were brought in just like Muschamp did (and fringe but taken for the stars players like Muschamp and Urbs did at times): Humphries, Pouncey, Walker, and Wright. All of the issues you mentioned plus injuries hurts depth of talent. That's why this year's class already looks better than the 7 to 10th ranked classes Mullen had.

Yes, definitely agreed. Some of the ways I color coded the orange and blue guys is up for debate and just based on my opinion.

LB went from a position with depth to an area of concern with transfers, but those transferring were often out of position last year

Yeah, I hated to see him go because he flew around and made plays, but if you look at the metrics this staff was looking for at that position he didn’t fit. The reason they are looking for those metrics is the ability to play both the pass and run.

Yeah, and likewise need to consider Mullen's transfers in. Van Jefferson and Greenard were great and are playing in the NFL, for example, but as far as this year's team there are a few key players:

    Perkins
    Boateng
    Lingard (starter?)
    Shorter
    Pouncey
    Cox (starter)

It's hard to tell a kid with aspirations to the NFL to be a 3rd down specialist against teams with slow tempo. But it is what he was and is.
