Lastres has serious MLB potential as a catcher and one of his key assets is his remarkable arm strength and accuracy. Now, he will likely miss playing behind the plate for a good portion or all of the 2023 season. I know he was trying to help the team- but blowing out your elbow in a bullpen session would be damn annoying to me.

If he blew out his elbow in one bullpen session, his elbow was a ticking time bomb anyway.

We also forget that Caglione and Coppola will be back next year and it seems like Abner got it figured out in the cape. If Sproat Comes back which it looks like is going to happen Pitching may end up being our strength this year. Lot of what ifs have to go right but there is a lot of quality arms down there all of a sudden.

I've heard nothing on Coppola thru the summer. If anyone out there hears something about Coppola I'd really like to know what to expect. Imagine if Coppola and Abner, our two best potentials as LHP, get it together for this year and add back Sproat and Waldrep as RHP this year gets really interesting.

On a positive note, at least you will know something before the sun goes down.

Who knows, he might have volunteered to pitch since he had successfully done so in high school. Maybe something is out there but I wouldn’t just assume that our coaches “forced” him into it.

All valid and legit points and questions. The thing is though—at this point there are more questions and speculation than there is accurate information to have an informed opinion.

Lastres has always been scouted as a strong armed catcher. I don’t know exactly what type of throwing he was doing. It does seem strange for messing around with one bullpen session to result in the TJ surgery.

The normal assumption would have to be there were already arm issues going on. But uninformed assumptions, for me at least, never seem to lead to accurate answers.

Whatever the circumstances resulting in his injury are/were, they are in the rear view mirror and hopefully he has a complete recovery back to game speed for him and our Gators.

All good points 74. Hoping for full recovery as Lastres has the potential to be a great one. My initial point is that I do know that Lastres, given his strong arm, did a lot of double duty catching and pitching in travel ball and HS so it could have put considerable strain on the elbow. And as 31 noted-- it may have been an underlying issue waiting to happen.

Unfortunately I guess I was wrong. It took more than a week for us to find out about Sproat staying.;)

This is great news for Gator baseball fans.

I hope it works out for Brandon next draft.

6 kids haven’t signed in the top 10 rounds in the last two drafts combined. 6 out of about 630!

And two were Gators… Those odds can’t be high.

Here's the 411 over the last few weeks about Sproat. About a month ago I started hearing talk about Sproat coming back and was told he had already got his roommate for this year figured out. Then there was talk about a higher $ expectation than his possible draft position, which is why I said it would be interesting to see where he got drafted in case his number was scaring off some teams. Then the draft hit and about a week ago I heard he and the Mets were more than a million apart which might be too far apart but Brandon was willing to negotiate. The tough part of all this was how much was possibly an agent dropping hints to work a better deal and how much was realistic. But as the Mets kept signing other players and the money went away it became very obvious all the info was true and Sproat was coming back. I can't say I ever knew for sure but I'm glad Brandon got an NIL set up instead that will help him thru the year.
Sproat to return to Florida, did not sign with Mets
"According to multiple sources, Sproat signed a NIL deal with the "CAN'T SAY THAT NAME HERE" as did 2022 starting catcher BT Riopelle, who had long been committed to returning to Gainesville despite earning first-team All-SEC honors as a draft-eligible player this past season."

And for those who are interested.....
I'm getting some other details about Gator pitching that will be another improvement to our arms available for this year. I need a few days to check the info but we are loaded on the mound for this year more than you might have thought. Mid October can't get here soon enough.

Friends, 2023 is beginning to look like the GATORS can be a very special team with outstanding pitching- as good and deep as we've had in years- and solid hitting. Looking forward to start of Fall practice/scrimmages.
Final note on the Sproat front- it appears the Mets did offer some $900k but as the bonus money started flowing to others they were unable to go higher without losing a first round pick- in essence the negotiations were over - days before the deadline.
