It appears that the NCAA is going to broaden the transfer portal rule so that it can be used as many times as a player chooses. This could lead to a kid playing his 4 years at 4 different schools without having to sit out at all. The Wild Wild West is about to happen in college sports.
I think a kid should be able to transfer whereever he wants, but every year? Kind of wonder how committed to a team a kid would be each of those years. This would be far worse than free agency.
Good for the kids. It’s a free market and they are getting paid. Just like working on Wall Street. Go where the money is best! If Morgan Stanley or Blackrock offers you more than Goldman you gotta jump. Absolutely Terrible for the sport and the fans. This is another nail in the coffin of college sports as we know them. I can feel my interest slipping away although I am still excited by this year’s team.
Yeah, the major Amateur Collegiate Sports are history. I'm not really sure why Sanky, Strickland and the Univ President want to keep jive talking about UF being a top 5 academic institution. Sure, many athletes do value a degree but in the minor sports. Does anyone really believe that a 5 star footballer or hoopster that comes in and excels for a year or two will be held accountable to even attend class? I find it disgusting that Sanky, or UF for that matter, talks up academics during SEC football media days, it's hypocritical beyond belief. Call it for what it is, kids are getting paid to go to SEC schools to be athletic entertainers and TV income producers. I also resent the hell out of Sanky running off at the mouth about how great and powerful the SEC is without nary a word, acknowledging the chaos he and the university presidents have created with NIL and the destruction of the Amateur game.
This would indeed be terrible for college sports. A better set of rules would be: You get one transfer without sitting a year. To play collegiate sports, you MUST pass a standardized, monitored national scholastic aptitude test. It can be a written or oral exam. If you are a college, you must sign players to two-year scholarships if they aren't seniors. All players will be paid a national minimum, no more, no less, including walk-ons. All players must take a course in money management (taxes, investments, savings, etc.). All players must take a course in ethics. You can turn pro following any season. Or skip college altogether. Such changes might keep me invested in college sports. The way things are going, I may not be a fan at all within a couple more years.
Sounds like you could transfer after each game with that rule if there is no limit...picture this scenario...Kentucky loses in the 2nd round of the tourney and is out but UF is still in the tourney so Wheeler transfers to UF immediately after UK loses and starts for UF in the round of 16. Here's another one...LSU needs UF to beat Kentucky to win the SEC...so UF adds several LSU players just for the Kentucky game to beat them. The scenarios under this kind of stupid rule could really turn into chaos.
Way too restrictive. If we're going to have caps and standardization for players then EVERYONE needs to be capped and standardized. Coaches can have a dorm like the players with salaries capped at $1M per year for HCs, $500K for coordinators and $250K assistant coaches. I like it! Saying that, there has to be some order with the transfers. Universities deserve that. Something like all players get one open transfer, one more open transfer with a HC change (just one per college career) and you earn one last open transfer after completing one hundred hours of credits with a minimum of a 2.5 GA. Then, like now, there has to be "windows" for transfers to eligible in the fall. Something like you have to be in the portal by April 30th and committed to a new school by June 30th to eligible for the fall football. Basketball's windows could be a month or two later. Who knows?!? I don't know what to do about NIL. There's gonna be some conforming regulations, but not anything too restrictive.
From what I have read, the change sounds like a done deal, but there will still be windows so a kid can’t transfer during the middle of a semester, for example.
I liked the system better before all this transferring. I believe we could have had a much better payment system than NIL in which all players could have benefitted, but it seems that ship has sailed, arrived, and unloaded its cargo.
Are you crazy Murph. I mean geez, it's all got to go to the top 20 in BB and top 50 in FB. To hell with everyone else, just like in the real world.
I see the problem centered on the schools subservance to the UAA. If a person meets the requirements for acceptance in the school why not allow them to transfer and require 12 to 24 credit hours before playing. Solves the freshmen eligibility mess which started a lot of the problems.
