I'm going to post this question first on this forumn and then again later on Swamp Gas.

Which Coach / team will have better success in year 1? Coach Golden and Gator Basketball or Coach Napier and Gator Football?

While perhaps a difficult question with many different parameters to consider, I'm a bit on the side of coach Golden and UF mens hoops making a bigger LEAP forward in terms of winning %, conference ranking and overall success year 1.

    What do you NBN's think?

I have just been so impressed with BOTH coaches so far, but believe coach Golden has put together a roster that could (could) be pretty good. How good?
OK, I will put on my Gator Glasses -

    Hoops
Conference regular season: top 4 SEC
    NCAA tourney: YES - Seed - 5th
Which puts us in that top 20 - 30 regular season category.

No knock on CBN, REALLY impressed with him, but I think Golden will have a bit better first year when the smoke clears.

    Your thoughts?

Apples and oranges comparison. The SEC has been the top football conference for many years. Occasionally an ACC team like Clemson plays at that level.

In basketball the SEC has been around the 4th, 5th or 6th conference with the exception of last season where they were 2nd. I am using Ken Pomeroy's analytics site for these numbers. I am not just making them up.

So it should be much easier for Golden to shine.

I think our basketball team will be good. The football team with this schedule is going to be really tough. The team is going to be good but so will the rest of the SEC. Hard to say.

I don’t know the answer, but the SEC will be loaded in basketball this coming season. The top tier of Kentucky, Arkansas, Tennessee, Auburn and Alabama all appear to have reloaded, and Texas A&M appears to be pushing its way into the top tier. I like Florida over the rest of the teams in the conference. A top-7 finish by the Gators in the conference should get them a 10 seed in the NCAA tournament. ESPN/Lunardi has the Gators as the 7th SEC team in the tournament as a 10 seed. My way too early guess has the Gators fighting their way into 5th place in the conference and getting a 6th or 7th seed. Things could change if we add a quality big man with our final scholarship. As for football, I have no real prediction right now because I don’t think that the team has much depth in addition to having a tough schedule. Also, no one really knows whether Anthony Richardson will become a dominating quarterback this season. The bottom line for me is that I think that we made 2 great hires in Napier and Golden, but to expect miracles in their first year on the job is probably asking a little too much.

Way too early to call, but I think we're on the right track. A lot depends on the health of CC and JJ. We have experience at every position. If the guys on hand right now can gel on the court, we could be good. If they do, and we land another good post power forward or center, we could be really good.
I'm hoping that CTG's fresh approach, with his traditional emphasis on rebounding, defense, shooting percentage, and limiting turnovers, plus his progressive emphasis on analytics, will pole-vault us to the top tier of the SEC.

Cautiously optimistic about both teams, but I'm going to say the football team will excel a bit more than the hoops team. Too many new pieces of the puzzle / moving parts to be really cohesive for the BB team, imho. I think it will take half the season to gel for them. Fundamentals and discipline will propel the football team to a surprise win or two. But who knows...

Typical summer post right - lol.
Well the men's baseball and girls softball got knocked out, what else is there to do?

    Anyway, appreciate the feedback,
Personally I am grateful and excited about both squads. Think it will be an exciting fall and winter for two of UFs biggest sports.

Did you watch any of the NCAA outdoor track and field tournament? It was awesome. National championships for both the women and men. Mike Holloway is one of the best sports coaches ever at UF; plus, I have asked Gator track star, Parker Valby, to marry me ( which is a problem since I am married).

I would disagree with you on this one, my friend. It’s far easier to get five basketball players to gel than a a football team that has offense, defense, special teams, and multiple position coaches. I say this as a lifelong basketball player.

A football team has way more parts and pieces to bring together.

First, it depends on the definition of "success". To me, football may reach quite a high level of success but the naysayers seem to be more prone to bouts of expectations exceeding the potential more in football. So, let us use a line in the sand for football and say a New Year's Day bowl. Everything else is the Weedwacker Bowl equivalency.

Now to basketball, I think the line should be the NCAAs and a first round win. Less "success" but probably harder to do when you are trying to put so many puzzle pieces together. I can not use a regular season standing in the line since I am not sure whether that will denote a good team, a mediocre team, a good conference or a mediocre conference.

In this light, I think that, ultimately, Napier is going to get to a New Year's Bowl (or being considered for one) and that is going to be more success. It would take Golden getting us to the Sweet 16 to trump that success.

Where I disagree is that the team, even though under a different coach, has the pieces in place for a lot longer and so it can adjust to a new way...IF they are not hung up on some culture that has formed (see FSU football). This basketball team has too many new pieces versus what the other teams have to mesh. JMHO

A basketball team is not as susceptible to issues due to personnel turnover. You can put in a whole new squad and get them up and running far easier than a football team. A new squad of good players can have immediate success even if they got assembled a couple of weeks prior. I would argue that if you put superior players together with just one practice, they will beat a less talented but better coached team.

For both sports this year, I'm most interested in the process & setting things up for a future of good play. I think it'll be easier to have a great first year in basketball.

A bit surprised by your post but then again you may be quite pragmatic.

I can hope for better results however.

Since this is the basketball board, I'll go with basketball. SEC Championship, SEC Tournament Championship and a Regional Championship, anything more is gravy. Anything less and it's time to get the firing squad warmed up!

Great news! We still have some sports missing a national championship, and Stanford has one of the better odds in Omaha.
