We just disagree. I think the post was ignorant and whiny, complaining that scientists and leaders didn't have everything exactly right from the beginning. Here is what he said.

'First, it was two weeks to slow the spread.'

In the very early days of the pandemic, the Trump admin came up with a '15 days to control the spread' campaign. It obviously didn't work and was woefully inadequate. But I don't fault them for trying (though they quickly abandoned any real attempt to control covid).

'Then, it was flatten the curve.'

This is a totally valid goal, then and now. We try to flatten the curve to avoid overwhelming our healthcare system.

'Then, it was to wait until we had a vaccine.'

Yep, and we did. And we got the vaccine and everything is vastly better than it would have been without a vaccine.

'Now, it's get more people vaccinated, without any specific benchmark marking the end to this hysteria.'

Yeah, let's get more people vaccinated. Let's keep trying until everyone in the country is vaccinated. But what hysteria? The country is almost entirely wide open. There are still some rules and conditions in place in a few places. That's hysteria?

And just for the record - there are ZERO "draconian covid policies" where I live in Virginia.

    No masks. No capacity caps.

I think the VAST majority of the US is back to business as usual.

Are you personally subject to any type of covid mandates where you live?

I'm sure calling them "selfish morons" will get them to take the vaccine.

And this is the question that matters. I don't trust the government to end this nonsense at the appropriate time. They've proven to be too stupid, too inefficient, too frequently.

Give me a benchmark, or you're going to get heat from me and people who think like me.

The fact that you had to ask me where mask mandates, social distancing protocols are still active on a UF message board... when UF still has these mandates and protocols makes your demeanor ignorant and dismissive.

    Yes, that's a legitimate concern.

It's also not unusual for hospitals to be at or near capacity on normal non-pandemic years. Without giving me a benchmark regarding vaccines or hospitalization numbers that are low enough to end the draconian protocols... this is pretty much a non-rebuttable claim. There is no level of hospital beds that COVID patients could be taking up that are low enough because they're still taking up beds at hospitals that may have been close to capacity even before the pandemic.

Telling vaccinated people that they still have to do all of the same things that unvaccinated people have to do unless they're AOC or Barack Obama or Nancy Pelosi requiring a haircut, is also not exactly the best way of getting more people vaccinated.

For God's sakes, people are acting like DeSantis is out to kill children with his executive order giving parents the right to choose whether their kids wear masks.

What word better describes that than "hysteria?"

I already posted the UF example earlier in the thread. There's also the building I work in that requires masks.

But that's also a faulty argument.

Whenever anyone talks about how Colin Kaepernick is one of the most privileged people in America, and how he's a beneficiary of the American system... yet whining about how racist it is... People say, "just because it doesn't happen to him, doesn't mean it doesn't happen to other people."

I don't think my posts are hysterical, but if you think my posts are the only ones that are hysterical, you must not read a lot of posts.

Considering that you posted in a UF thread without realizing that UF still subjects student and faculty members to COVID protocols tells me that's fairly likely.

You are a student at UF?

lol @ “a building I work in”. Which building is that? Is there that a mandate that only applies to the building that was instituted by the private owner?

Seems like you are all upset about “draconian policies” that have absolutely nothing to do with you and are far and away the exception to the rule. Why do you care?

It is frustrating to keep answering this over and over again. People like you frame it only how it impacts you. You need to frame it how it impacts everyone also.

Clearly the disease is still rampant, with lots of people hospitalized and even dying. A vast majority of those are unvaccinated, but not all of them.

    - the Pfizer vax prevents hospitalization at 77% after 4 months. That is good, but it isn't 100% or even 90%. There is still risk to vaccinated.
    - the vaccine does reduce spread, but doesn't eliminate it. To the extent more people are vaxed, both the remaining unvaxxed and vaxxed are safer (herd immunity impact)
    - full hospitals effect health care workers, and everybody else, and cause worse care for other non covid cases.
    - not everyone can be vaxed. Kids can't. While fairly rare, kids do get sick.
    - while ignorant unvaxxed people bear their own consequences there are others around them, family members, etc, that are affected by this.

If Pfizer prevented hospitalization at 90% would that be good enough?

Gator715 is super butthurt about the government’s “draconian covid protocols” of which he is not the subject of any.

Draconian: (of laws or their application) excessively harsh and severe.

    Checks out to me.

If it prevented transmission at 90% like it did at first and more Americans took it, I don’t think we’d be seeing any back tracking on masks and capacity caps because the spike would be significantly smaller.
