I so wish I could still play. Unfortunately health reasons have eliminated that possibility. You don't realize how much you miss that stuff until you don't have it anymore. I can barely play a game of horse but that's just the way it is

Well, the occasional shot to the groin to your opponent tends to make them jump as high as you.;)

For sure, I try to participate with my 18 year old, and it does not work out so well for me!

Sorry to hear that, Hall. That’s a great reminder to everyone out there to keep playing until you can’t! You never know when you won’t be able to anymore.

I used to spend time on a (concrete) basketball court but sadly, I never could “play” but experience counts and at 5-10 and 75 (age, not vertical) I can still run the chit out of the four corners that I played in high school when the real ballers needed a rest!

I played the noontime pick-up full-court game at Florida Gym and then at the nearby student rec center until we got kicked out and had to play outdoors on the Hume courts. IIRC they let us play at the rec center for a bit after that because one of the regulars was a good friend of the dentist (Bernie Machen) that ran UF.

I did stop playing when I was 50.

I think you have a pretty good idea why I ask. The best I can tell from online sources is that the average vertical jump in the NBA is 28"

When I was an undergrad a bunch of guys from my dorm were messing around on a basketball court. One of the guys who was about 5' 10" jumped and everyone just stopped. He was a white farm boy from western Illinois. We put him under the basket and asked him to leap as high as he could from a dead stop. He had most of his forearm over the rim.

From then on he was known as Frogman.

Never was a good basketball player.

Well, I said, and I quote, “Anything 30” and under is average to me.” 28” is under 30” last time I checked. So if the average vert is 28”, that would fall in line with what I said, no?

I was 6' 2" and could get a few inches after my wrist above the rim with a running start back then. I was pretty much earth bound. Enough to stuff a volleyball but not quite enough for a basketball.

Frogman just had those fast twitch muscles, but not the dexterity for shooting or dribbling and had no concept of the game.

I bet he would have been a great high jumper with training.

LOL....I just thought it a bit strange to be ragging on a college kids vertical possibly being under 30" while the NBA average is only 28"

I didn’t rag on him. I said his vert is about average... which it is. How is that ragging on him? NBA isn’t some magical place with rosters full of 40”+ vertical leapers. I don’t think you are looking at this correctly.

Glad to see so many still playing.

I played till Covid came and my fall/winter league is still shelved right now. Im a bit worried I won't get back to it if I have to wait till Sept '22. I turn 50 this fall.

Damn. How did this happen? Lol.

From the video you linked there’s a lot to like about this kid. Love his athleticism. Kid also is a leaper and flashes a good handle. Shoots the three ball and has good hands and feet. Of course he needs to add 15 to 20 pounds of muscle desperately but kid has alot of tools to build on.
