For every minute Corey spent in the weight room, the NBA trainers made him spend a minute in the Dunkin' Donuts.

Many years ago the "geniuses" on this board said that Brett Nelson needed to put on weight. And he did.

I just watched some highlights. I don't really see much there, to be honest. He has height and length, though. That counts for something. Needs a lot of work to graduate from being a guy playing basketball into becoming a basketball player.

just the one video from his twitter shows his raw skill and athleticism. If you dont see it there then you are just being a bit rough on the kid. I am not saying he is going to make a major impact at UF, I just know when I see potential and this kid has it. I am no CMW fan either, I am just being very objective about what I see.

He is much different then Osifo, he could rebound without much else. They wanted him to play defense and he was awful at it

I didn't say anything which would go against your observation, nor am I being tough on him. He is raw and somewhat athletic. He is not really a basketball player yet. I'm not saying he can't get better.

For the record, I am a Mike White fan.

Geniuses also said Ryan Appleby needed to put on weight. And he didn’t.

oh I know you are a CMW fan, I used to be. I said I saw something in him. He is more then somewhat athletic. Yes he is raw, he has good basic skills. He is again Raw and thin. He has good bounce, shows good timing on his blocks and cant teach that wingspan.

First of all, I welcome the young man to Gator Nation. There is no malice or ill intent in my stated opinions on his game.

He has about average bounce. Anything 30” and under is average to me. I’m 5’10” with a 7’6” reach. That means I need 30” vert to touch the rim. Average high school basketball players at that height easily get higher than that. Who can’t touch the rim? I used to be able to dunk in college. I still don’t consider myself ever having elite hops even though I was somewhere around 38” vert. I’m in my mid 40’s and still have at least 30”, so I’m not impressed when a young 6’9” guy can dunk a basketball with a 25-30” vert.

Look, I’m not saying he can’t become good, but what about his game is even remotely impressive besides his height and length? I’m not bashing the young man or writing him off, but he has a long way to go. You said he has “basic skills”, but is that what usually gets you into a program like UF? I wish him nothing but success, and he is in a good place to learn and improve.

Right now, I see a body that isn’t filled out enough, footwork that isn’t solid, somewhat decent dribbling, and a questionable shot with one of the most awkwardly wide stances I've ever seen. I’m not exaggerating. He does seem to run the floor well and protect the rim, however. I’ll give him that.

Larry Bird at 6' 9" was not known for his vertical or dunking.

Jai Lucas and Chris Walker could really jump.

Ryan needed a better handle, not more weight.

He became affectionately known in the PAC 12 as "Apple Turnover."

Ok that’s cool but... we were only talking about vertical because it was mentioned that he had good bounce. Nobody was claiming that it makes him a better player.

I'll claim it. Jumping higher would make every player better. I think Larry Bird would agree.

What is the average vertical of 6'9" players in major college basketball?

Well, that's not exactly the same context as what was implied. If you increase your vertical leap at any given point in time, yes, I suppose it is helpful. I don't know what Larry Bird, Steph Curry or James Harden, for example, would really gain by jumping higher, but I guess it wouldn't hurt. Their styles of play don't really rely on it.

More in context with what was mentioned earlier... a player's basketball prime is usually not during their absolute physical prime. They might have some lost outright speed or vertical from their physical prime, but in their basketball prime, they are more skilled and wise. Michael Jordan's prime wasn't when he was dunking from the free throw line, it was when he matured and really developed his mid-range, post game, and other basketball skills.

I think that my physical prime was from about 19-24, but I was a far better basketball player after. I'm in my low 40's and I kid you not, I think this 40 year old version of me would give the 20 year old version of me problems on the court. This is despite being not as fast (but still fast) and probably losing about 7-10 inches of vertical leap. I just had a league game last night and the game comes much more easily to me now due to experience. Most of my frustrations on the court these days are that people don't understand the game and how to play it.

Bill Lambier (sp?) / Pistons could not jump an inch off the floor and he did pretty well.
