Especially considering how many games he sits out.

When I was a kid and pitchers had to hit in both leagues for the most part catchers batted eighth and pitchers batted ninth. The job of the pitcher was usually to take as long as possible with his at bat so that the catcher could get his gear back on.

Very few catchers were Johnny Bench, Carlton Fisk, Gary Carter, Ivan Rodriguez or Yogi Berra. I might have missed a few here like Bill Dickey, Roy Campanella, Mickey Cochrane and the like. Most of them back then were really solid defensively and not much of a threat at the plate. Great hitters that are also great catchers are rare.

Solid defensive catchers that are a net positive at the plate are very valuable to a team.

Pete’s gone yard with a solo shot vs the Braves tonight. Currently down 3-1. Pete’s HR is their only hit so far.

My bad, I misheard the TV announcer, no long ball for Pete.

Alonso with a game tying HR in the top of the 7th (doubleheader so the last inning based on MLB’s bizarre recent rules) off Chapman and the Yanks.

Pretty rough inning for DOD though. A 2-run jack (the runner wasn’t his responsibility) and 2 BB.

The pitch wasn’t that bad. Outer half. Pete just went with it. Nice piece of hitting.

Outstanding outing for Dane Dunning tonight. 5IP, 1ER. The one ER was a HR, the only hit. 6Ks.

I think their bullpen crumbled behind him—tough to let one slip away.

Alonso with a 3-run jack today. Up to 16 on the year. He could still hit 35+ if he gets a little hot.
