CDC says U.S. has ‘way too much virus’ to control pandemic as cases surge across country

The coronavirus is spreading too rapidly and too broadly for the U.S. to bring it under control, Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Monday.

The U.S. has set records for daily new infections in recent days as outbreaks surge mostly across the South and West. The recent spike in new cases has outpaced daily infections in April when the virus rocked Washington state and the northeast, and when public officials thought the outbreak was hitting its peak in the U.S.

“We’re not in the situation of New Zealand or Singapore or Korea where a new case is rapidly identified and all the contacts are traced and people are isolated who are sick and people who are exposed are quarantined and they can keep things under control,” she said in an interview with The Journal of the American Medical Association’s Dr. Howard Bauchner. “We have way too much virus across the country for that right now, so it’s very discouraging.”

Cases continue to increase throughout the U.S. There is, though, some good news on the global scale. Here are the three day increases . . .

Updated stats as of 8 am EDT. There were 13 states that had a decrease in active cases. There were 10 states with 1-2 deaths and 16 states with 0 deaths. After making the picture of the spreadsheet I noticed I transposed the death number in Conn. The correct number is 4320 not 4230.

The death rate has consistently dropped for 39 of the last 40 days that I have posted these stats. The lowest rate since April 21st.

Not necessary, almost every nation will probably ban travel from the most infected nation on earth. Even Canada doesn’t want U.S. tourists.

On the bright side, I guess we can still vacation in Mexico or Brazil. Lucky travelers might even win a permanent residence in a mass grave down there.

I mentioned the irony of these questionnaires you have to fill out these days to enter many business a few weeks back. This morning to enter my doctors office I had to confirm I haven’t traveled to any highly infected areas within the past two weeks. The doctors office and my home are in Gwinnett County Ga, which Is the 3rd highest infected county in the state. So yeah, I have. Of course they mean China and other Asian nations, but yeah, these questionnaires are useless and borderline offensive.

Those questionares were actually stupid just a few weeks in to the pandemic, when it was already clear there was community spread in this country. Basically anytime after mid-March. It's actually comical at this point, as you illustrate.

At least now I guess it's for "information" purposes, hopefully nobody is basing diagnosis or whether you are a worthy candidate for a COVID test or not. At the start of this, they would actually use such questionnaires to give a sort of preliminary diagnosis and decide if you need a test or not. Been to China or on a cruise? Test. Been to NYC? Oh, not China so must just be the flu - no test. There were a few weeks early on where that is basically how Florida's tests were administered. Of course tests were in very short supply then, so I guess it was just an unfortunate way of sorting all that out early on.
