Florida Gators: McElwain recruiting Davis hard

Florida Gators head coach Jim McElwain has been on the job less than a month and he’s been focused on recruiting daily since the moment he was hired.

“Recruit daily or die” is what McElwain said he needed to do and that is exactly what he has done with receiver Ryan Davis (5-10, 170, St. Petersburg, FL Lakewood) as the two parties are building quite the relationship together with McElwain explaining how he could use Davis at Florida.

“I’ve been talking to Coach McElwain about every day or every other day and it’s going good,” Davis said. “Coach Mac has just been telling me how much of a need I am at Florida right now.  He tells me that I will play the slot, kick return and punt return. He says he wants me to get the ball a lot.”

McElwain has been doing the heavy lifting on Davis but running backs coach Tim Skipper and defensive backs coach Kirk Callahan are also recruiting the talented receiver.

“I’ve talked to Coach Skipper and to Coach Callahan the last few days,” Davis said. “Me and Coach Callahan have a really good relationship with each other from when he was recruiting me to UCF. We talk all the time about everything really. He’s a good dude.”

While Skipper won’t be Davis’ position coach, he still knows how much of a playmaker Davis is and that’s the message that Davis is getting.

“Coach Skipper says that he likes what he’s seen on film from me so far,” Davis said. “He said I’m a special player and that he thinks I could do some special things at Florida with the ball.”

Davis is still waiting to see who Florida and McElwain will hire as the receiver coach but McElwain did make one thing clear to Davis.

“Coach McElwain says he knows who the receiver coach is but he isn’t ready to announce it yet,” Davis said. “He said that he’s going to get someone good in there to coach up the receivers and that I don’t have to worry about.”

A lot of schools have come into the mix with Davis as of late and that’s causing him to rethink who will get official visits in January.

“I’m finalizing my official visit schedule this week,” Davis said. “I’m not sure who will all get an official right now. Florida, Auburn, Alabama, Maryland and UCLA are recruiting me hard right now. Michigan and Miami are also trying to get in the picture. That’s why I haven’t finalized my officials yet.”

INSIDERS TAKE: Getting Davis up for an official will be huge because he will be able to hear McElwain’s plan for the offense as well as meet everyone. Davis knows he can play early at Florida and I believe that’s something that Davis keeping remembering about Florida. Ultimately this is an Auburn and Florida battle now.
