For the 23rd straight year, the Florida Gators opened their season with a win, this one, 77-69, over North Florida Friday afternoon at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. Casey Prather scored a career high 28 points to go with eight rebounds to pace the Gators while Michael Frazier added 19 and Kasey Hill had 15.

The Gators (1-0) travel to Madison Tuesday evening to play Wisconsin. Their next home game is November 16 at the Stephen C. O’Connell center against Arkansas-Little Rock.

Back in January of 1969, the late, great Jack Hairston, then the sports editor of the Jacksonville Journal, called me on the phone one night and asked me if I wanted to work for him. I said yes.
