The University of Florida men’s golf team finished in a tie for third after shooting a six-under par on the final day at the Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.
For the tournament, the Gators shot 17-under par.
“We played better today,” said UF coach Buddy Alexander. “The course played a lot tougher than it did the first two days and we did a good job of adjusting and made up some ground as a result.”
The Gators were led by junior T.J. Vogel, who blazed the course with a four-under 68. Vogel used five birdies against a sole bogey to finish his tournament with a 208, eight strokes under, for a ninth place finish, his seventh Top 10 finish of the season.
Junior Tyler McCumber also broke 70 on the day for the Gators, shooting a three-under 69. McCumber, who made the turn at even par, heated up on the back nine making three birdies and six pars to tie for 10th with a 210, six under par.
Freshman J.D. Tomlinson rounded out the Gators in the red on Day 3 using three birdies alongside two bogeys to card a 71. Tomlinson finished the tournament at four-under par, 212, earning a 13th place finish.
Freshman Eric Banks and senior Zach Lee also competed for UF. Banks finished the tournament in 217 strokes after a final round 74, two-over par while Lee finished the week at 10-over after a 77 on his final round.
Competing as an individual, senior Michael Furci carded a final round 72 (even) to finish his tournament at 215, one-under par.
“We’re still learning and improving although it can’t happen quick enough after seeing what Alabama did out there this week. That was an impressive display of golf,” Alexander said.
The Gators return to the action on Saturday, April 7, when they travel to Tampa to compete at the Gary Koch Invitational at Old Memorial Golf Club.
