McCumber leads Florida men’s golf after Round One of Hootie @ Bulls Bay

Sophomore Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) led the Florida Men’s Golf team after shooting a 70 and earning a top-10 finish on the first day of the Hootie @ Bulls Bay Invitational in Awendaw, S.C. on Sunday.

McCumber made four birdies and a bogey before making a double bogey on the 18th hole to finish in a tie for 10th place.

“Tyler is a big key for our team,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “When he plays well, we play well. He played a beautiful round today.”

As a team, the Gators shot a 288 and tied for seventh place with N.C. State and Duke.

Sophomore Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) made three birdies, a bogey and a double bogey to stay on par for the day and finish round one in a tie for 19th place.

Senior Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) made one birdie and two bogeys to shoot one-over par and finish in a tie for 34th.

Sophomore Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Michael Furci (Sayville, N.Y.) shot a 75 and 77, respectively.

“We played alright, but conditions got a little tougher as the day went on and we didn’t putt particularly well,” said Alexander. “It can be fixed and we’ll be a little better tomorrow. We are certainly not out of this tournament.”

The Gators will return to the course for round two on Monday, March 28.
