Horschel four-time All-America golfer

Florida golfer Billy Horschel has been named to the Division I All-America first team sponsored by PING golf equipment and announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America last weekend at the NCAA Men’s Division I Championships at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

It’s the fourth time Horschel, a senior from Grant, Fla., has been named to the PING All-America teams and third time he has been named to the first team. Horschel is the fourth four-time All-American, joining Matt Every, Gary Koch and Camilo Villegas as three-time first-team selections.

“I’m extremely happy for Billy,” coach Buddy Alexander said. “He’s worked hard and he deserves this. Of the guys I’ve coached he’s the most decorated player that I’ve ever had. He has certainly been a great player for the Gators.”

Horschel, who was the medalist in the SEC Tournament, was also named the conference golfer of the year and a unanimous first-team selection on the coaches’ All-SEC team. He and Koch are the only Gators to be named first-team All-SEC all four seasons.

Horschel led the SEC in scoring average (71.28 strokes per round) this season. He placed in the top seven in eight of 11 tournaments this season. He shot par-or-better in 21 of his 32 rounds and finished ninth in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index Ratings. He also was a semifinalist for the 2009 Ben Hogan Award.

Joining Horschel on the first team were Jorge Campillo of Indiana, Rickie Fowler and Morgan Hoffmann of Oklahoma State, Matthew Giles of Southern California, Matt Hill of North Carolina State, Kyle Stanley of Clemson, Nick Taylor of Washington, Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech and Mike Van Sickle of Marquette.
