Gators post pair of wins at Black and Gold Challenge

ORLANDO — Florida’s Daisy Glasser (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) and Keely Medeiros (Blumenau-SC, Brazil) each picked up wins in their respective events Saturday to open the 2011 University of Florida outdoor track and field season at the UCF Black and Gold Challenge.

The competition served as a low-key start to the outdoor season for eight of Florida’s field athletes. Participating teams at the UCF Black and Gold Challenge include Florida, Jacksonville, Michigan, Texas and host UCF.

Glasser opened the day by winning the women’s pole vault competition with a leap of 3.80m/12-5.50, while teammate Claire Spurling (Jacksonville, Fla.) placed second with a vault of 3.50m/11-5.75.

Medeiros directed a 1-2-6 finish in the women’s discus, winning the event with a toss of 51.02m/167-5. Sophomore Ashley Miller (Miami Beach, Fla.) was second with a throw of 50.17m/164-7, while Kaitlin Davis (Niceville, Fla.) was sixth overall in the women’s discus with a throw of 46.21m/151-7.

Alexis Muniz (Coconut Creek, Fla.) tied for second in the women’s high jump with a leap of 1.65m/5-5, which tied her personal best outdoors.

The Gators return to action next weekend when they travel to Orlando, Fla., to participate in the UCF Invitational.
