Frosh in women’s tennis continue NCAA run

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Florida’s Megan Alexander and Csilla Borsanyi pulled upset wins for the second consecutive day in their respective matches at the NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championships on Thursday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Borsanyi marched into the round of 16 after earning a hard-fought 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Auburn’s 16th-ranked Fani Chifchieva, marking the highest-ranked opponent the Gator rookie has defeated during her young career. Borsanyi’s win stretched her singles record to a Florida-best

29-10, as she aims for her 30th victory of the year on Friday against UCLA’s 40th-ranked Tracy Lin, who upset William & Mary’s eighth-seeded Megan Moulton-Levy to advance.

Alexander moved forward after winning the first set 6-4 before Stanford’s 20th-ranked Jessica Nguyen retired from injury. The Gator freshman earned her fourth consecutive win over a nationally-ranked opponent, including the opening-round three-set thriller over

10th-ranked Jenna Long from North Carolina. Alexander next faces fifth-ranked and fourth-seeded Lindsey Nelson from Southern California.

The run by Borsanyi and Alexander is only the second time two Gator freshmen have reached the round of 16, matching the run in 1988 by Nicole Arendt and Halle Cioffi, who eventually fell in the final match to Gator sophomore teammate Shaun Stafford.

UF junior Diana Srebrovic put up a fight, but fell in her second-round match to top-ranked Audra Cohen from Miami, 6-2, 7-6 (3).
