Florida’s Vongvanij wins SEC Golfer of the Week

For the second time in two months, Florida’s Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) was named the SEC Golfer of the Week, the Southeastern Conference announced on Friday.

Vongvanij fired a nine-under-par 207 and captured his third medalist honor of the season at the Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.

Vongvanij finished one-shot better than Auburn’s Kyle Kopsick in second place and North Florida’s Kevin Aylwin in third. His opening round of 66 was the best round of the day and tied for the lowest round in the tournament.  He followed up the 66 with a second round 68 and a final round 73.

With his victory at the Schenkel Invitational, Vongvanij has three first-place finishes, three in the top five, one in the top 10 and one in the top 20 in the Gators’ first eight tournaments.

He became the first Gator to earn three medalist honors in a season since Camilo Villegas recorded three in 2002. Only four other Florida golfers have accomplished this feat in history (Villegas 2002, Steve Scott 1999, Brian Gay 1992, Chris DiMarco 1990) and DiMarco is the only golfer to have more in a season with five.
