Florida tennis takes on Troy today

The University of Florida women’s tennis team will kick of the 2012 portion of varsity play today against Troy at home at Linder Stadium Ring Tennis Complex at 3 p.m.

Last year was a success for the Gators as they won their fifth NCAA Championship but the team is excited about this year.

“At this point we’re looking forward to starting over again really. We’ve done a lot of good work, been running a lot, doing a lot of footwork, so fitness-wise we’re about where we need to be frankly. Even chemistry I think is really good,” coach Roland Thornqvist said at Monday’s press conference.

If the Gators win on Wednesday against the 0-2 Trojans, it will be Thornqvist’s 250th win with the team. He currently has 324 wins overall. The team is 3-0 all-time against Troy with the last being a 7-0 win on Feb. 7, 2010.

Florida had a strong fall season with Allie Will winning a collegiate grand slam in the Riveria/ITA All American Singles Championship. Joanna Mather went to the finals of the USTA-ITA National Indoor Championships. Mather and Lauren Embree were victorious in the Riveria/ITA All American Championships consolation doubles final. Sofie Oyen and Will made it to the doubles finals of the Riveria/ITA All American Championships. Embree made it to the finals of the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships.

The Gators are on a 95-game home winning streak including 17 wins from the postseason. They also have a 102 game regular season home winning streak.
