Boonstra moves on in singles tourney

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Florida junior Marrit Boonstra of The Netherlands advanced to the second round of the singles competition Wednesday in the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships at Texas A&M University’s George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

Boonstra, ranked No. 8 in singles, advanced by beating California’s Bojana Bobusic, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), and next faces Georgia Tech’s Christy Striplin Thursday morning in the Round of 32.

Fellow junior Anastasia Revzina of Moscow, Russia, also competed in singles competition but lost. California’s Marina Cossou scored a 6-2, 6-3 victory to end Revzina’s singles season.

Boonstra and Revzina also are competing in doubles with freshman partners. Boonstra and Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.), the No. 18 team in the draw, will play the fourth-ranked North Carolina team of Sophie Grabinski and Sanaz Marand. Revzina and freshman Jessica Alexander (Dallas, Texas), the No. 25 team, play the No. 39 team of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska from Texas Christian University.
