ATHENS, Ga. – The Florida doubles team of Marrit Boonstra and Allie Will advanced to the quarterfinal round at the NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championships after a three-set victory over the Stetson team of Carolina de los Santos and Valentina Galbarini Friday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus.
Boonstra, a senior from The Nethelands, and Will, a freshman from Boca Raton, beat de los Santos and Galbarini, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4. Next up Saturday is a showdown with the No. 1 team in the 32-team draw—Tennessee’s Natalie Pluskota and Caitlin Whoriskey. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
In the Friday match, the first set was on-serve until the Hatters broke Will in the 12th game to earn the first set. The Gators came right back and took an early break for a 3-1 lead. That was the only break of the second set, as Will served out in the 12th game to force a deciding third, where Florida began with a break and Boonstra held for a 2-0 advantage. The Gators earned another break, but Stetson refused to fold and broke right back for 3-1. UF also stepped up and earned its third break of the frame and kept that lead en route to the victory.
Boonstra improves her career doubles record to 75-21, including a 24-3 mark playing with Will, who is 37-6 on the doubles court.
Earlier in the day, Will, ranked eighth in the country, lost 6-1, 6-4 to Georgia’s 12th-ranked Chelsey Gullickson in the women’s singles Round of 16. Will concludes the singles portion of her rookie season with a 48-5 overall record, the fourth most wins in program history. Will also compiled a 26-match winning streak during the year, a run that tied for the fourth-longest in program history.
