The Veterans are organizing a million man march on Washington for Oct 13 The movement is gathering steam as even truck drivers are getting involved. obama you better get your tanks tear gas and armored vehicles ready

"Outraged that the government shutdown has denied veterans access to numerous memorials in Washington, D.C., a group organizing a march on the capital is gathering support from all over the country.

Million Vet March on the Memorials is planning an Oct. 13 protest, according to its website:

We do not care what political leanings you may be; be it liberal, conservative, Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Independent or whatever. The actions of the U.S. government this week with regard to barricading and shutting down the World War II Memorial to veterans, that may or may not be on their last trip to Washington DC, is a despicable act of cowardice.

If something happened on the memorials because of the furloughed security, Obama would be blamed. If he ignored congress and had the security stay, it would be called an abuse of his powers. Either way, he can't win.

Yet, the party responsible for the shutdown should really be taking the blame for this.

Funny that there weren't any protests when the memorials, museums and parks were closed during previous shutdowns. If I didn't know better, I'd say this smelled of partisan politics masquerading at patriotism.
    Nah, couldn't be.

Although President Obama claims that he can’t avoid shutting down public sites and monuments, war memorials were in fact kept open during the 1995/1996 government shutdowns. The administration’s decision to barricade the Lincoln Memorial marks the first time in its history the memorial has been totally off limits to visitors during a shutdown.

The administration has also balked at efforts by non-governmental groups to maintain access to public sites. (Related: RNC offers to pay to keep WWII memorial open)

But during the Clinton-era shutdown, World War II veterans kept the Pearl Harbor memorial open.

That's the problem. They aren't. They are protected by the media.

The dem refused a bill funding the memorials so I guess the dem own it

It is not clear how much taxpayer money the Obama administration is paying to ensure that government sites and services remain shuttered to taxpayers. Popular Washington spots such as the World War II memorial are now guarded by more security personnel than they are during normal operations, while federal employees have been dispatched to put up barricades on capital bike paths and other public grounds that are not usually patrolled at all.

it's funny that the OP automatically assumes the march is going to be primarily against Obama. When spokesperson that OP cited holds libs, cons, dem, GOP, etc, etc responsible

Vets on their own may tend to bash Dems in the past. But in recent years vets have been shifting towards being dems(though majority are still GOP)

OP, also seems to be automatically assuming that since truckers are joining in that they too would also favor con/GOP's and go to bashing Dems/Obama. In case the OP is unaware---vast, vast majority of truckers are Dems. Then you can also toss in the truckers union which is very strongly Dem.

There is no large place to gather right at the WH. The typical location for million person gatherings is between the Capital building and the Washington Monument. And with the seat of Congress at one end of the open area you can count on the million doing a lot of venting at Congress(mainly GOP)

Finally, GOP has not done well between Capital Building and Washington monument in recent years probably best visualized and heard with the following

all those barriers were to close the information booth?

from the non-partisan (as opposed to Daily Caller) The Week:

From a USA Today article written before this shutdown:

And just in case you guys are still denying it, here's the conservative National Review writing before the shutdown about what happens:

    link

I mean think about it, you had one of the best-known conservative publications in the country explaining before the shutdown that monuments will be closed, because that's what happens in a shutdown.
So, Republicans force a shutdown, monuments are closed and conservatives start screaming "Wait a minute, Obama closed the monuments!!! This has never happened before!! It's an outrage!!!"

What would be more meaningful and save lives is use this energy and political statement to protest the effects of the shutdown on the NIH and the longer term sequestration cuts to NIH.

The government shut down already allows for the security of all federal building to be kept on active payed duty. So your point is moot.
