12 Flat-Out Bizarre Pirate Traditions Most People Don't Know About
Normally I'd say you can never have too many ho's but that is two too many, @g8orbill; it's yo ho, yo ho, not ho ho, ho ho.
That site claims that pirates wore gold earrings to pay for a proper casket or funeral in case they were lost at sea and their bodies washed ashore. I'm calling B.S. on that one.
All you have to do is think about it: If somebody back then found a dead body on a Caribbean shore with gold earrings in his ears, do you really think they'd use the earrings to pay for his funeral? Much more likely they'd take the earrings and leave the body for the buzzards, or maybe just kick some sand over it.
The story I've always heard, which to me seems more believable, is that pirates and other sailors wore gold earrings in case they passed out while carousing on shore and missed their ship when it left. They obviously couldn't go to an ATM and take out cash in that circumstance, but they could sell their earrings for enough money to tide them over for a few days until they could sign on with another crew.
