Wisconsin takes a knee to run the clock to bring the field goal team on for a winning chip shot kick. The refs let the Arizona State guy lay on the ball while the clock runs...then the REF HOLDS OUT HIS HAND TELLING WISCONSIN TO WAIT TO SPIKE IT....AS THE CLOCK RUNS OUT!!!

The weirdest ending I have ever seen.

I cant imagine how those kids feel. Great drive in the final minute...to literally have the refs steal it away.

Does the QB's knee ever hit the ground? isn't that a fumble? refs messed up by standing around like idiots.

So I assume the plan was to center the ball on first down, spike it on second down, and then kick the field goal on 3rd down? 18 seconds leaves very little room for error. they should have just kicked the field goal.

also, the qb had no clock awareness. he's just standing around while the clock is running, not realizing how much time is left. upon taking a knee (which he didn't really do), he should have immediately gone to the ref asking him to re-spot the ball. he only realizes he's not going to have enough time when the crowd starts counting down. that's when he goes into a frenzy trying to set up to spike the ball. if the crowd had never started counting, he probably would have just kept standing around as the clock ran out.

the refs screwed up, but it's really the Wisconsin qb's fault... or the coach's fault for calling a dumb play.

Shame on the officials for looking so dumbfounded, but the blame goes to the QB. I think the clock should've stopped and it would've been ASU football anyway.

Should have been a delay of game penalty on ASU.

I agree. Thats on the QB. What a dummy....he had zero urgency until at about 1 second. Then he he starts freaking out. His coach probably let him have it last night.

Now i may ask stupid but isn't it a fumble by the Qb. He basically put the football on the field and it was recovered by ASU. I I'm mind that isn't the same as a spike but may be just me that gets the rule wrong.

Guys the qb did the right thing. By rule you can give yourself up in that manner.

Plus the ground can't cause a fumble. When he places the ball on the ground to "give himself up" by rule the play is dead.

Credit the QB for knowing the rule. The refs certainly should do the same

18 seconds was plant of time to center the ball...and spike it.

Poor choice by the coach? Maybe.

...but a terrible job by the pac10 crew.

Unless it was obvious that Arizona State players were trying to delay the game then you don't call the penalty. If you don't call the penalty then the clock doesn't stop and Wisconsin doesn't have enough time to run another play. This is why you don't just put the ball on the ground the way the quarterback did when there is so little time. Is it a fumble? No. However, if a defensive player sees the ball on the ground they are going to jump on it. The won't get possession of the ball for jumping on it but they also won't have a delay of game penalty called on them unless they refuse to get up in a reasonable amount of time. A reasonable amount of time isn't defined by the urgency of the other team.

That's on the qb, in live action it lookedl like a fumble, ASU had to jump on the ball like it was, the act caught the officials by surprise, the QB should have given them the heads up before the play, then he takes way too long afterward, like he didn't realize the clock was running out
