Good for them We need more like them. A group of around 90 World War 2 Vets knocked barriers down and gained entrance to the grounds to see a memorial honoring them. A security was hard to say no way was he going to try and stop them

"They stormed the beaches in 1944 and now they're storming the World War 2 memorial. As the U.S. government shutdown enters its first day, a group o f200 World War 2 veterans visiting the memorial in Washington, D.C., have broken up barricades to enter the site despite the National Park Service closing the public parks. "I’m not going to enforce the 'no stopping or standing' sign for a group of 90 World War II veterans," said a U.S. Park Police officer, who declined to give his name. "I'm a veteran myself." "What do I do, boss?" #WWIIMemorial on Twitpic

With bagpipers playing "Amazing Grace," nearly 200 veterans from Mississippi and Iowa swept past barricades and security guards at the World War II Memorial in Washington in order to keep a commitment to visit the site, which was closed today due to the partial government shutdown. The veterans, in their 80s and 90s, were accompanied by Rep. Steven Palazzo, R-Miss., a former Marine who earlier vowed not to let the National Park Police keep them from a planned visit to the open-air monument.

"For some reason, I just feel like royalty," Jim Ferencak, a Navy and Air Force veteran told GulfLive.com at the event. ]

These guys, who never had this memorial for most all of their lives, are now chartering Flights as a group from around the country to see it before they die. These flights have a dozen doctors and are planned for months. I can only imagine how angry they were today. Kudos to the park police.

obama wants every thing to look worse than it is and what difference does it make if it is just a bunch of old world war 2 vets that pay the price

I don't know the answer to this, but is the memorial NORMALLY secured by guards? And if so, why couldn't these guards today, who are there presumably to secure the memorial, ALSO secure the memorial in the presence of those attending it?

I guess government workers who set up barricades are "essential". What a load of federal government crap. And you wonder why we're so pissed.

They just showed film of the vets entering the memorial. This is an open air no bldg memorial. There was no reason to close it down other than for obama to make a big show

However it was an awesome sight watching them go thru the barricade as if to say screw you obama stop us if you thank you can

They did just show the film. One of the park officials moved a barricade open. I think "storm" is a bit dramatic, but I guess that's a part of the narrative here.

The vets I saw interviewed had the good sense to avoid questions about politics. This wasn't a political pilgrimage and it's sad that some are trying to make it one.

No. Been there 3 times and it is open air. Closing it was spiteful and meant to cause as much damage as possible to try and score political points. Even libs should be ashamed of the decisions made by this admin. Close the WH and other things people care about while bailing out Detroit. Man is narcissistic scum of the highest order

    "Storm..."

Someone should revoke his dramatic license. I just saw the event on the local news. Peaceful and moving.
