Rachel is an ignoramus, and an embarrassment to the Florida School system.

That said, I applaud Tom Joiner for granting her a scholarship. I hope she uses it to improve her dialect.

But . . . you can't say that ! You can't accuse people of the truth when it is politically incorrect to do so because of . . . !

And I also hope she improves her dialect, loses some weight, and gets a new crew.

I think this thread is an embarrassment to Florida's school system.

unless you are God, you can't state what someone does or doesn't deserve with any true authority

Unless the aim of the scholarship is to help people read and write.

Silly me, times must have changed. I remember when those skills were mere prerequisites to the gateway of college.

It is at my college, but I think 108's point is that "deserve" is a subjective term that no one person has the power to determine.

How does one survive even at the community college level without those skills? I think 108 is not very realistic for whatever reason. The word scholarship has seemed to lose its meaning.

If you attended the Florida school system, at least it taught you to read and write, for which you should be thankful.

    It doesn't anymore.

I celebrate it almost everytime I put on a record. Sure, everyone should learn "standard English," but "butchery" of the language is a massive wellspring for creativity and expression.

Well I assume that he isn't conceding that she can't read or write. Obviously, a lot of scholarships are aimed at educationally disadvantaged students, so the "scholar" part might have lost it's meaning long ago. Personally, I think we might be sending too many students to college, but as I am also a big proponent of education myself, I don't fault people for hoping college can be transformative, rather than simply selective.

I think the moral of this story is this is someone that would need to substantially increase their basic education skills in order for college to have an meaningful advantage for her.

I always thought that is why the Iranian students always took engineering because they couldn't speak or write much english but mathematics is the universal language. Maybe they can do calculus in the hood. She may be a math whiz.

Except you just can't waltz into engineering classes. You're required to take a whole lot of Liberal Arts classes. Been there done that
