Guys out there have done a lot worse and received nothing.....there has to be something more to the story as to why this guy got what he did.

someone should pick him up.....a program that is 2nd/3rd tier that has the potential to be really good.

he can get the program going in the right direction.

Bruce Pearl got what he did because he lied to the NCAA. They will lower the boom with their biggest hammer if you do that. Ask Jim Tressell, who got hit for covering up a violation that didn't involve him or anyone on his staff. Ask USC, who stonewalled the NCAA for years over Reggie Bush, when the penalty if they had been honest would have been minimal.

That said, Pearl was covering up for the kind of secondary violation that happens at every program on occasion, and he has done his time.

I think he is a helluva great coach and a pretty likeable guy. By all accounts his players loved playing for him and he would stand up for them. He will definitely should be and will get picked up. I'd like to see him come back to the SEC, but if he does, when he gets that team back up and rolling.... They will be tough to beat.

Pearl's problem, IMO, is that college BB, via the AAU mess, is too damned corrupted and he wants/needs an edge. Same with Sampson. Clean up the mess and then good coaches can coach. But I am afraid that things are too out of whack right now.

Billy D hopes a Bruce Pearl team doesn't return to his schedule anytime soon.

My view exactly. He was great for SEC basketball and thought UTn should have kept him but on a very short leash.

Sampson is a true scumbag and full-on cheater. He was on probation for impermissable contacts when he took the job at Indiana, yet he was doing the same old crap the day he landed in Bloomington.

Pearl's record is far less troubling. I would hire him in a second.

Georgia took a chance with Harrick and got burned. While that was a decade ago I do not think they would make that mistake again right now.

    Gotham? Secondary violations?

Pearl got caught having multiple contacts with recruits he should not have had. That bbq at his house, for instance, with multiple recruits where he counceled both recruit AND parent to keep it quiet and deny it all.

Phone calls to recruits he was not supposed to be doing.

    Secondary violations? ROFLOL

He knew exactly what he was doing was wrong and got what was coming to him.

He's a cheat. Pure and simple.

Those were secondary violations as classified by the COI. It is also worth noting that neither one of the players who went to his house for that cookout in Sept '08 (Josh Selby and Aaron Craft) signed with Tennessee. The Deon Thomas / Jimmy Collins episode is often referenced by people looking to attack Pearl but they never mention the fact that Illinois was placed on probation for seperate violations uncovered during the course of the Thomas investigation. Illinois was also a main player in the Hart Lee Dykes football recruiting scandal which landed them and half of the Big 8 on probation at that same time - not exactly a model athletic dept. Pearl will get another job and probably keep winning. He took Wisconsin - Milwaukee to the sweet 16 for crying out loud. During his tenure at Tenn he only coached two players (CJ Watson and Tobias Harris) who spent any time at all in the NBA. Yet, he still made it at least as far as the sweet 16 3 times. The guy can coach. He would win big at Memphis.

With Thomas Pearl kept calling and calling (often in the middle of the night) until he finally got him to say what he wanted him to say on tape. Clearly Deon said what he said just to get him off the phone to get some sleep at 3 am. That is a sign of a total creep.

The violations that got Illinois in trouble was that two of the "Flying Illini" got Chevy Blazers at regular price with their parent's co-signing on loans. Of course both were going to be making big bucks the next year in the NBA, but the NCAA said that they got benefits that other students didn't get in this deal and hence it was a major violation.

Perhaps it would have been better for a booster to rent them vehicles like at UNC.

And somehow a Duke player getting carte blanc at Tiffany's without a co-signer is OK.

Just hope it isn't in the SEC!

Question, did the back to back Nat'l Championship teams ever win a game against Pearl, our best teams we ever had?

Pearl knew how to control a game and the officials. Also, knew how to market his team to the Vol Nation. Brought back Men's basketball at UT, a tough sell in the land of Lulu.
UT's new coach has been given a pretty good team unlike what Pearl came into. Pearl will coach again, because he can get a dormant program up and running.

Florida did beat Tenn easily at home in '07. I believe Pearl's record vs Florida was 8-5 with Florida winning 4 of the last 5 including all 3 in '11. The 2 games Tenn won in '06 were both classics. I have never heard Thompson- Boling Arena any louder than at the end of our '06 game.

Fox is definitely a great coach. His success at Georgia was always going to be dependent on whether or not he could recruit in the Southeast, especially Atlanta. He hasn't been able to get the big time Atlanta kids to stay in state and he hasn't really been able to find SEC level talent elsewhere.

Pearl will definitely get a shot somewhere, but I'm not sure it will be as high level as some are guessing in this thread.
