"Longing for liturgy" seems vapid and shallow. I'm online dating now and at least half the women describe themselves as "spiritual but not religious." I doubt that they know what it means. How do I know that ? I ask them what it means. They don't know.

Hope all has been well. Struggle with the same thing with a former longtime (20 years) employee of mine. She's into (was) Wayne Dyer stuff. I say "was" because she just died Sunday night from ALS. She was diagnosed just six months ago. Don't know where she was spiritually when she died. Struggling with what to say at the funeral as to not offend anybody.

That IS tough, mb. Sorry for your loss. Honestly, I'd almost rather hear "I'm agnostic" as it may convey a certain struggling with the faith.

^^^no offense dream, but your 'online dating' pool of survey participants, is presumed to be rather shallow at the outset. So it's not like that would come as much of a surprise to anyone.

    Sorry for your loss mb.

As for the funeral comments--may I kindly suggest that you don't bother with what her ultimate fate is at all--you don't know, so don't pretend to (don't mean that patronizing--just no point at all in you going there; fact is, you do not know. Period.). Stick to her time here, when she was alive--memories, stories about what kind of impression she left... Talk to her co-workers and family; maybe they can give you some ideas, trip some memories... point being--stick to what you know.

    Just a suggestion.

Hogwash, where do you want me to meet them, in a bar ? A church ? Don't make me laugh. Churchgoers divorce at a higher rate than non-churchgoers. At least online there is no pretense.

^^^my man, meet them where ever you will, I don't begrudge you anything at all on that count.

I'm only saying that you're gonna have to to a whole lot of vetting, because 'on line' brings all comers--hence a 'survey' based an on-line pool of participants, probably isn't going to yield the most informed responses.

    just say'n....

(and I was just having a little fun--only partially at your expense...) ;)

No pretense? You're sounding defensive and fooling yourself about that, I think. I don't know whether it's true that churchgoers divorce at a higher rate than the non-churched, or not. Off hand I would have said the opposite. One thing is for sure. People saying they are "spiritual, not religious" are echoing the correct, trendy thing to say. It is but an insipid cliche that really says nothing about what these women may, or may not, believe.

Good advice. Won't pretend to know her "fate" but at the same time funerals tend to soften hearts. Will be a lot of bikers there as her husband is a big rider. Want to "kindly, gently" get the Gospel message into the conversation. The service is being held at a Christian Church. Perhaps the Pastor will cover it.

Edit: Just looked up where the service is being held. It's an Assemblies of God church which are "spirit filled". Have a feeling the Pastor officiating won't be shy with the Gospel.

In my experience, it means that you don't want to be seen as an atheist but also that you don't want to go to church either.

Where did you get that from? According to this blog, divorce rate goes down as church attendance goes up:

Furthermore, according to this post, active Catholics have the by far the lowest rate of divorce (and this is directly relevant to this thread).

This sounds great. Can I ask where your church is? I'm quite tired of sermons with simple platitudes. I grew up in a catholic church and attended a Christian school. I've got all the basics. I'm looking for a church service that brings an intellectual approach including historical context, etymology, and actual discussions of theology. Basically, I want to learn something not attend a pep rally.

Divorce rate among Conservative Christians higher than among other faith groups and much higher than agnostics and atheists: http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_dira.htm
