We just really, really don't understand how alienated these people can feel. I mean, it's really, really, a bad feeling, and if you've never had real bad feelings over feeling really alienated, you just can't understand.

The sucker punchers, I'm talking about.

There is nothing that proves or qualifies this statement, we are just told to believe that this is the case:

So yeah, sensationalized. Here's some more fake trends, helpfully archived:

    http://nymag.com/tags/fake-trends/

    http://www.poynter.org/latest-news/...es-jack-shafer-calls-out-bogus-trend-stories/

People love turning annecdotes into fake trends. We see it every day here. Everyone's losing healthcare, or hates/loves Obama, becoming a libertarian, or showing renewed interest in various things.

You have failed to read my previous posts with linked articles. Also Dave posted some links that explains this is nothing new and has been happening for some time. The guy that was killed in St. Louis (which is not NY) was in 2011. In Pittsburgh (not NY) there was another death. Massachusetts, yeap been going on for a few years. Illinois, Yup. Somehow now I'm being accused of starting a fake thread.
I'm going to say it once more, this is a story that doesn't fit a narrative to your liking.

So, you disagree with the article's narrative then. Because the article says its an "emerging" trend, not something that has been happening for a long time.

We already proved in this thread this is nothing new. Go and research it wgb. I guess the term of knockout game is new, but it's the same think as polar bear hunting and what other names they had. Just go back in the thread and read it.

"Proved" it, eh? Hmm, what was I saying about people turning annecdotes into trends?

I'm sorry but when there's videos of the incidents, doesn't that go into the realm of "it actually happened?" (don't have time to go through the whole thing, but I thought I saw a video clip back in pg 1 or something)

No offense, but if you had taken the time to "go back through the whole thing" you'd find that is not at all what was being argued.

There were nearly a million reported violent crimes committed by juveniles last year. What percentage does the knockout game represent to make it rampant? Or maybe I should ask what exactly do you mean by rampant?

Ah, the old percentage play game. Tell me, what is it here that has you looking past these incidences?

Nice try at a deflection. I'll just take it that you understand what such a tiny fraction would mean....i.e. that it might not "rampant" that you've been hyping.

Haven't been looking past anything, in fact, I've spent a good bit here providing context about teen violence that is based on 100 plus years of empirical research. That isn't to argue that the nature of the cases aren't disturbing, they are, but you seem to have dispensed with any sense of proportion or context that might better explain these incidences.

No deflection, one article I posted said it is a rampant problem. Secondly I said it was rampant or rampant enough to make a story. I think you're grasping for straws.

Here is another cute game called get a jew.

If it's reporting of random violence in your community or places you travel to, then you might have a point, but if you live in upper middle class suburban Florida and are concerned about violence there because of something you saw on TV about inner city Chicago then you're a victim of media sensationalism.

I'm reminded of the "gang intitiation" urban legends I used to hear. Drive around without headlights and kill/beat up whoever flashes you.

He just claims its "rampant" with very little qualification. This is a great example of commentator/pundit hyping & sensationalizing something.

I mean, 100-1000 people probably had sex with a dog in the last year, so we can probably write a story about "rampant" beastiality too and cite a few examples as "proof."

Does it really matter? I don't think you're giving enough credit to each individual reader. Just like every thread here the people who want to see this as a growing trend will. I see it as an interesting news story. Some will see it as non newsworthy. We can all agree even if practiced by one band of misguided youths it's a very dangerous game

Yes, I suppose we can all agree on meaningless platitudes and simply let everything pass uncritically here and say "too each their own, thanks for the interesting information." That would make an interesting hot topics forum.

I remember getting that email in 1992, then about an hour later another email about how it was an urban legend.
