Sorry, I hit reply on the wrong thread. Bottom line is neither Dream nor Richmond will ever have to prove their theory of the good nature of man, therefore they can say whatever they want

All good; and absolutely agree. In an ideal/utopian world, there would be no need for a military or violence or arms. But it's simply not the natural world. Conflict and violence exists in the natural world across every single animal and organism in existence. Mankind is really no different in that respect.

"It makes no difference what men think of war, said the judge. War endures. As well ask men what they think of stone. War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner. That is the way it was and will be. That way and not some other way." ~ Cormac McCarthy

Well, the government empowered me. But I suppose I believe it's "okay" for the same reason you think soldiers are absolved of any wrongdoing when they opt into a horse$hit offensive war and start killing people.

You've made the distinction in this case between war and murder just as I do between abortion and murder.

Somebody breaks through your window and murders your wife & kids. You know who did it. Your response would be to install shutters?

So if the war doesn't go past three months is it still murder? If it does, do the casualties during the first three months "count"? o_O

I never so much as implied that man is anything other than sinful by nature. But I believe that it is naive (and possibly self-serving) to imagine that people overseas just wake up angry with America without cause. Our country has a long and illustrious history of meddling in the affairs of other countries, throwing its weight around, stirring up trouble and bringing pain to itself.

And your response would be what? Go to that person's neighborhood and burn it to the ground - men women and children wholly uninvolved be damned?

Well the soldiers up thread were talking about what's fair game within the context of what I feel is an unjust war. No civilians - but if they're brandishing a firearm in their own country- then fair game. It's all murder to me, you've just drawn arbitrary lines about what is acceptable and what is not within the context of an unjust war- just as I have done with abortion.

It's true. Had we not gone to war against Hitler we'd all be speaking German today, just like the Japanese are all speaking English.

...and when have we done this? Every errant bomb or civilian casualty usually means the govt sends a team to try and make amends.

I think you're confusing our response with that of the people we're fighting. You know, the ones who place bombs in civilian areas, men women and children be damned.

Good citizens always build a school on the scorched remains of neighborhoods and people they've burned to the ground.

The reason we have a military is to protect "our" claim to natural resources and strategic trade routes, etc.

We were attacked by fewer than 20 radical jihadists on 9/11 (the majority of whom were Saudi). Our reaction? Launch a full scale invasion of Afghanistan.

I'd say that's akin to "burning down the neighborhood". And that's without even mentioning Iraq.
