What Routine Are You Doing These Days ?

    Mine is like an anti-routine. I have a 135 lb. barbell set up on the porch and a chinning bar over the bathroom door. Most days I get in a few pulls. When I go to the bathroom I'll do two or three pullups. I may do pushups now and again. Most days I'll take a 75 lb dumbbell and do a few goblet chair squats.

    Sometimes I'll do something like bear crawl to the bathroom and duckwalk back. Sometimes I'll do gorilla hangs on the chinning bar. Animal movements. Basically, it's the spirit moving me.

    Emphasis is on convenience and safety. I always do strict reps and nothing remotely close to failure.

    I still get in plenty of walking. And since my neighborhood is hilly I don't have to do a lot of it to get my wind up. Do a little mobility work when I feel like it.

    What is a gorilla hang? Can your neighbors see you on your way to the bathroom?

    I'm very pro-routine. ;) I've been on a 5/3/1 variation - just 5/1 (dropping the 2nd and 4th week) - for a while. I do this on a 2-day split on T (SQ/BP/Chins)/Th (DL/SP/Chins). I also put in a HIIT session on M/F and I play 2 hours full-court basketball on W. Often skiing on Sa/Su, too. It's a bit much, really and I'm having recovery issues, but I can't stop.

    Just hanging from a chinning bar with one arm. Apartment is very secluded. Have no problems with a conventional routine but this is ideal for a varying work schedule. Having basic movements dialed in like this enables me to almost sub-consciously get in a little work most days.

    That certainly sounds a lot easier to fit into life than my routine.

    And because I rarely go all-out I'm itching most days to get some work in.

    Train for your goals.

    Sounds like we're both achieving that. For me, strength training and conditioning work have drastically elevated my game and my skiing, while simultaneously making me generally harder to kill.

    And survivability is no small asset. Somebody always seems to be after my hide.

    Mondays: squat + deadlift, 10 sets each
    Tuesdays: racquetball, 2 hours
    Wednesdays: chins and dips, 10 sets each
    Thursdays: basketball, full court, 2 hours
    Fridays: (vanity day): bbell curl x 6, bench dip x 6, db extensions and some ab work and farmer's walks
    Saturdays: basketball, full court, 1 hour

    Do people still play raquetball ? It was on pace at one time to become the next soccer. I was hardcore in to it. Played in tournaments. Patterned my game after Marty Hogan.

    I'm going to start P90x3. I like that it is 30 minute workouts. Once I get my body tuned back up I plan to get back on the mats doing BJJ.

    monday/thursday - chest, shoulders, traps
    tuesday/friday - back, arms, legs
    wed - abs, obliques, weak point stuff
    sat/sun - sprints, abs either sat or sun, playing with my huskies

    i have 4 more weeks of smolov training for squats so i am squatting mon/wed/fri as well.

    Did you get to 405, yet?

    I got my DL to 380x1 on Philippi/coan before I got sick and then further derailed by life. :( 2xbw dead will have to wait a little longer.

    Got my 2 X dead a little over a year ago. Been there. Done that. Got the t-shirt. Also gained ten pounds since making the prospects of revisiting 2 x especially daunting.

    This week (peak portion of my 30 week IM training - IM Texas May 17):
    Most all is done in aerobic HR zones, with some intervals of harder work mixed into sessions

    Monday 2 hr run
    Tuesday 1 hr bike, 1 hr swim
    Wednesday 1 hr bike, 30 min run
    Thursday 1 hr run, 1 hr swim
    Friday 1.5 hr swim
    Saturday 5 hour bike
    Sunday 2 hour run

    next week rest Monday, then repeat above for remainder. Next 5 weeks the long run will increase 15 minutes each week to a max of 3.5 hours. Try to fit in occasional strength training but normally too tired. Been on this program for 20+ weeks and have lost 8 pounds and starting to become pretty lean.

    Tough to fit it all in sometimes. Makes scheduling the day of utmost importance.

    Monday - core/pilates type workout
    Tuesday - crossfit/kettlebell type workout
    Wednesday - general weight training
    Thursday - crossfit/kettlebell type workout
    Friday - happy hour with friends
    Saturday - yoga and yard work
    Sunday - walk/bike with wife

    generally try to integrate a good pinot noir after workout.

    I'd wither away to nothing if I did this much endurance training*


    *My body would revolt way before that anyway.

    When I lived at Jax beach years ago, bike rides and surfing were the routine!
