This is something I've been wondering for a while now. What exactly makes someone a great recruiter and how do you even judge something like that? Ed Orgeron, Charlie Strong, Joker Phillips, just to name a few, are often called some of the best recruiters in the country, but what makes them so?

Is it just that they interact with the kids really well? They have a high percentage of bringing in players that they've recruited? They're really good at cutting down the opposition? It just seems like such a subjective metric and I don't really understand how you qualify someone as "the best recruiter" in the country or something like that.

I would say being able to relate to the kids comes first. Then of course the coaches track record/pedigree also mean a great deal. JMO.

I dont think we need Ed O. To answer the OP question I have always felt the good recruiters get who they are supposed to. The great recruiters get who they are supposed to and one or two kids they are not supposed to get. DJ Durkin getting Matt Rolin from USC is one of those things that makes a great recruiter IMO

I would say.. Not in any order, and just using Asst. coaches, ( although O is technically a head coach right):

    Coach O
    Jeremy Pruitt
    T Rob
    Chad Morris
The top asst at Ole miss. Can't remember the name.

Listen this is just my opinion. Means nothing nor does it matter what I think

I think it is a really good question, but impossibly to answer categorically. Most just look at a recruiter's success getting top kids or dominating his region, but how one does that can be wildly different. For some it is scouting and unearthing players who fit the scheme, but aren't rated as highly. For some it is the ability to connect with younger kids and develop a relationship with them. For some it is how they sell the "vision" of the program. For some it is their ability to establish relationships with coaching staffs at high schools who can both steer them to the better kids in the area and steer their own kids to the recruiter's skill. It is all over the map really.

A great recruiter lands players who become stars…..period! I don't care how many rating stars they have, if the player doesn't perform, they don't count. I always loved Spurrier's coach who brought in all the great WRs we had in the 90's. Can't remember his name…..Dwayne Dixon?
