It's a shame there won't be a packed house for Wes. I'll be there. Probably my favorite Gator player. Best Gator offensive player ever IMO. Some may say Percy, but if you never saw Wes play, you missed a great one!!

Wes Chandler was my childhood hero! I liked the Saints and Chargers when he went there.

Too bad it is for this game.

You could put all our wide receivers together, break Chandler's leg and he would still be better than all of them.

He still holds UF records for TD to reception ratio and yards per catch. Big play man!!

Good for Wes, he played on some pretty mediocre teams, but was a force in the passing game.

In one of their back yard home videos shown during the Manning documentary, a very young Peyton declares "I'm Wes Chandler".

Agree with OP.......most electric player in school history.

I saw that too. That was an interesting documentary I thought. I have a lot more respect for Archie, than I did before, although i don't like the fact that he tends to ignore Gator greatness. Anyway, good observation.

With this year's coaching staff, Wes would be riding the pine behind Andrades.

Wes was one year behind me in high school here. Huge asset to the Barracuda football team. Reggie Beverly at QB, Reggie's brother Keith and Wes playing left and right halfback, and Ricky Faircloth at fullback, the Cudas went 11-0 my senior year before losing to Milton in the semi's.

The Cudas went on the next two years to contend for a state title.

Reggie later played QB for Bethune Cookman and then coached for them for 16 years.

We know where Wes went....and what his accomplishments were.

Our head coach Bud Asher went on to become mayor of Daytona Beach....and just recently passed away.

It's really nice to see Wes appreciated so much. If you ever got to meet him he was one of the nicest persons you would ever meet. Very down to earth.

Can't wait to see the game on Sunday (Breakfast with the Gators) and will enjoy seeing Wes back in the Swamp again. :)

Our High School, Lakeview, played New Smyrna in the Orange Belt Conference of old.

We beat them pretty good at their place and scored about 50 on them. Wes and Reggie were sophomores with the others I think it was.

Anyhow, got to see him three times in all and the team Bazza describes was one hell of a team. They beat us by 50 a couple years later and I think some of the guys are still trying to catch Wes...

Still one of if not my all time favorite Gator.

Wes Chandler was every bit as good as Percy. If I had to choose one, I'd choose Wes because, while equal in ability, Wes was more dependable. What those two guys had was the ability to change direction, to "juke" at full speed - and full speed was just about world class.

That's cool. Never knew Wes and Cris were from the same neck of the woods.

Wes was a senior in high school the same year as me but I played locally here in gville. Our season had ended in 1973 and my whole family is from NSB. My dad took me down to New Smyrna to watch them play Astronaut for the district title who happened to have a soph. QB named Collinsworth and Astronaut won. Back then only the district winner went to the state playoffs and both teams were undefeated when they played what was the last regular season game. Wes would gain 5 yards when it looked like he would get nothing but they couldn't contain Titusville and lost. I also remember another Fla grad from NSB named Harvin Clark who I got to see play down there in the 60's. Wes was an incredible receiver with moves like Ike Hillard but not sure if he had the flat out speed that Percy has but could really shake and bake. Great choice by UF to bring him in for this.

Chandler and Harvin were equal in moves but Chandler had the best hands of any gator receiver, ever.

The year after 4th and dumb I was sitting in one end zone when the Gators were marching on the other. I really couldn't see what was happening when all of a sudden Wes Chandler rose up above all the others to snatch the ball out of thin air. I can still see that today. Incredible catch. Dashed the dawgs hopes.
