We should switch the TV camera to the East side of the stadium.

The west side is so much cooler looking....not to mention fuller :plain: ....
From a marketing viewpoint it would be much better to have that be the side that people see on camera.

Is it the sun thats an issue? It just seems odd that people on TV see the only portion of the stadium that has not changed for 50 years.

You could build a nice little booth for the TV crews to be on the camera side.

Anyone else ever wonder about this?

Yeah, it would be nice for the view change but like you said, I believe the sun would ruin it.

With how absolutely pathetic the student section has become I agree.

Funny how we're calling for the exact opposite for the O-dome

They would have a problem with the sunshine.

I suspect direct sunlight might cause an issue with camera lens flares as well as create an exposure issue.

The other bigger issue is that during the high contrast part of the day, without the direct sunlight (being shaded by the skyboxes), the West stands would look very dark and drab, with very little discernible color with the daylight exposure the TV cameras use. It's almost impossible for a camera in the sunlight to properly expose and balance a shadowed area without burning-out the sunlit areas.

Take a look at the picture below, which is probably taken early in a 3:30 start game. Notice how dark and drab the color in the West stands is.

I think it's also more difficult for cameras in direct sunlight to expose both the lit and unlit parts of the field from the sunlit area than to adjust when they're in the shaded areas.

In addition, you'd either have the commentators looking directly into the sun as it get's low on the horizon if you built the press box on the East stands or have them trying to have them describe the game from the opposite direction, unless you only gave them monitors to look at.

This obviously isn't a problem for night games, but those aren't all that common for us.

Tilly, I'm kind of surprised that you'd ask this question, being a photographer and all.

So the shaded side is fuller than the side where you suffer from horrible heat and can't see as well because of glare? Hmmm.

Maybe if we switched everyone's tickets and put the hot sunny section people in the shaded section and put the shaded people in the hot sun, suddenly more of the no-shows would actually attend and we could instead blame the formerly shaded people who don't show as "pathetic."

Or we could do what the Romans did and put polls protruding out across the top of the nosebleeds with tarps that have advertisements on them. Serves two purposes, shade for the spectators and money from the advertisements.

Lol...I know right...I think though the photo cited shows some decent contrast and it is not from an HDTV camera.

I think 3:30 games are the only issue...and the sky boxes make things different than 20 years ago.

Cameras could also be set lower...maybe 50 rows up or so.

I know its a logistical issue...but it could be conquered.

As a photographer I know that any lighting issue can be conquered ;)
...especially with a budget the size or UF.

....but I admit your points are all correct and may not be worth the expense to solve.

My daughter graduated last year. She says the problem with student attendance is that UF is admitting too many brainiacs. They don't care about sports.

I think a group of honor students won the block of the game, and they were celebrating pretty enthusiastically. I don't think it's the smart kids, they're the ones less likely to need to leave to go drinking.

Geez...your honor. The prosecution would like to withdraw his case.

    The defenses evidence is overwhelming.

Yes, you could always balance the backlight with massive shiny boards or lights, but it would increase the field temp to about 130 degrees or more!
