I think he should have been there - however, if he had gone, he only would have been pretending anyway. At least he's being real and showing us all what is truly important to him instead of trying to pretend otherwise.

To be fair, I appreciate the fact that at least he isn't treating a dead General differently that a dead Private.

This was going to be my question...

Setting aside precedent and partisanship for a second, what message would it send if this guy got a presidential (or even VP) visit, when the privates and corporals etc making a fraction if his salary and volunteering for the really dangerous work every day get nothing other then a blurb in the local paper?

To me every life is equally valuable, whatever honors or kudos he gets should be no more or less than any other soldier who died.

Does Obama comment on every young person killed? Just those that are high profile cases. A General killed in a war is high profile.
How do you think the families of all the kids killed not even getting a mention by Obama?
Every life is precious, but Obama seems to choose who he thinks is the most precious.

The only thing that is precious to politicians is their agenda. People don't matter.

I agree but knowing the right is looking for anything to blast you for, maybe take the day off from frivolous personal activities. But this is coming from a person who thinks golf is stupid.

He doesn't attend a General's funeral but invites the parents of a deserter to the White House.

I mean - some may disagree, but in the military, rank changes how everyone acts. I saluted officers when I was enlisted, and I had to spend multiple 12-hour shifts cleaning a hangar so a general could spend five minutes walking through not noticing a single thing I did.

Rank changes how you're viewed, treated, and how much power you have. It's kind of like saying no one should care if the President dies because he's just another citizen like everyone else, right?

Saluting someone and viewing their life as more valuable are two things in my mind. I answer to my boss, they make more money than me and have more "power" but if we were both to die I am confident that my employer wouldn't treat our deaths any differently.
I do think you raise an interesting question on the death of a president, but I think the difference is that everyone feels invested in the electing of a president, he is also a well known figure for whom many will want to mourn at some level. This man, however accomplished and presumably valuable to the military was an unknown (outside of a few in military circles) until he died. Additionally when a world leader dies he has powerful friends around the world who also want to be there for personal (as well as yes political) reasons. Obama didn't know this guy I would bet, nor would his going help anything politically other than himself, which most of his critics would then pounce on if he had gone, claiming he doesn't care about the military and was only there to look like he did.

You are completely right and he should be at every single one of them to show respect for their service.

I have refrained from saying anything about this until now. Did any of you know the General's Aide was shot multiple times in the same incident? The Aide is a young Captain with a family and may not walk again.

The General killed in a combat zone will always garner more attention because it is uncommon.

The point is - they're treated differently and viewed differently in life and death. What we're talking about here is treatment.
