Urban Meyer: "We are disappointed we didn't have the #1 class. That's our goal around here."

My, how one quote sums up everything good, and equally bad about this man. His rise, and his downfall all in one. This guy was a star chaser. Worked for a while, but reared its ugly head the last few years here when we weren't getting positions of need anymore. He seemed to be chasing after the ranking services.

He can really recruit, maybe the best in the business.

I love what he did while at UF and the 2 MNC's.

I'm glad he isn't the coach here anymore.

Yeah. I still remember when he recruited and signed Jeremy Finch out of Indiana (I believe) at the last minute. Only because the guy was uncommitted and was high up on the recruiting service board. On paper, made the class look even better. But the kid got hurt and was homesick and left without every contributing. What was the point in that? What's why you develop relationships with recruits and don't over-attend to recruiting service rankings.

Yet Muschamp out recruited him after a 4-8 season.

I suspect -- meaning I'm not sure -- that Meyer promises these kids whatever they want and borders on groveling. When you do that, you might sign the player, but the player basically owns you. And when you do that with enough recruits, one day you wake up and have a team full of guys who don't respect you. That's one explanation for the cancerous attitude that infiltrated the program under his watch and is still showing residual effects to this day.

Instead of focusing on those he has in hand, he is lamenting about those that got away.

Nicho, you truly truly hit it on the head with your post.
And Muschamp has been battling that for 3 years now.
And believe me, this is not my opinion alone, but for me, the information that I've been given ... it holds true

Biggest pimp in the game, Urbs didnt worry about searching for talent he could read the espn top 150 and have his way. That s way you end up with bad chemistry and esophageal spasms. Just give it time and it will manifest at OSU just like here.

I think the cancer started on Zook's watch. Spurrier was willing to suspend star players before big games (like Javon Kearse and four other starters before the Orange Bowl). But Zook was an enabler of player misbehavior, such as the time he reportedly became a participant in a brawl between players and members of a fraternity. He was so eager to be a "player's coach" that he forgot he was a grownup. Meyer had earned a reputation as a strict disciplinarian at Bowling Green and Utah, but when he got to Gainesville and felt the tremendous pressure to exceed what Spurrier had done I think he saw that for a few years at least it was in his own best interest to let discipline slide. He signed superstars like Harvin and Tebow and won two MNC's, but it was only a matter of time until the wheels were going to come off the wagon. Eventually they did, he cracked under the pressure, and so he left.

Finch played some before his injury , and he did show promise, as a freshman I think he had an int and a 50 yard return, then he got hurt and got behind on his studies…

don't know whether CUM signed him purely for his on paper numbers, but Finch was athletic, I wonder how he ended up (didn't he go home to Indiana?)

Urban is not even close to the best recruiter in the biz, that's a joke. Saban is hands down número uno.

Meyer recruited great players who provided Florida fans with three 13-1 seasons in four years, 2 SEC titles and 2 NCs. What has WM done with his own recruits? Almost nothing.
