Disconcerting. Interesting that a UK paper is reporting this first.

    narrow escape

    major oops

gotta be some sort of joke in all this regarding how things might have been better without NC, tobacco, etc. Though personally I'd prefer NC not be wiped out since my daughter and grandson ,and due shortly-granddaughter live in NC.

hopefully though, is that our arsenal, both nuclear and conventional has more reliable hardware that would actually work as it is supposed to work.

    --------

so, which POTUS(or POTUS's) should be raked over the coals on this incident
--Ike---incident occurred in 1961-most likely the construction of the hardware of the defective bomb occurred during his admin via one o f the companies of the industrial-military complex
--JFK-- for covering it up at the time
--all POTUS's of Ike to current POTUS for failures/cover-up in the matter
--only Dem presidents from FDR to present
--only GOP presidents from Lincoln to present.

I consider the following POTUS's as having screwed up in this matter
    -----NONE
    1. There will be hardware screw-ups that occur far outside the ability of a POTUS to prevent
    2. For any POTUS from JFK to present to make this public would needlessly be a bad PR move in regard to U.S. prestige as well as military competence.

It's only a matter of time before Bush gets blamed.

Had they detonated it could have plunged the world into nuclear war.

Probably a false flag to reduce nuclear arsenal.

    So, close...

Misleading title IMO as it implies there was an intent at some point to do so.

My father was a B-52 pilot during the cold war. He never told me about his missions but it's pretty common knowledge now that we had B-52s in the air around the clock loaded with a nuclear payload. Many flew from a couple bases in Michigan's UP to areas in Northern Canada ready to make quick jaunts down to Russia should anything untoward happen to the US.

Wasn't a Dem in office in 1961? That's about the typical media turnaround for a Dem error of epic proportions.

It's amazing what comes out when things get declassified. It also shows that there isn't any foolproof systems to prevent a disaster. Now this didn't happen and maybe there was an analysis that said we need 4 system checks because 3 isn't enough but to have things come to the brink is pretty scary. Also the stories about the buggy Soviet defense system and their almost pushing the button. Have we dodged bullets or did the systems do what they were intended to do in the face of human errors?

you're right. JFK should have done a much better job piloting that aircraft. Can't believe the media covered up for him like that.

That's no excuse. Three days is plenty to learn how to fly one of those things.

Kids and their toys. Only in this case it is toys that can wipe out most of the life on the planet.
