    I don't have much of a problem with community service type stuff. When it becomes a large alternate labor pool competing with and circumventing wage workers, then I have a problem.

    The type of work a chain gang would do would most likely be the type of work illegal immigrants currently do, i.e. the jobs Americans don't want, so I don't think that's much of an argument against it.

    I'd say conscripted labor replacing undocumented wage labor isn't an improvement. It's probably even worse. As I said, neither is ideal. But at least one is arguably a free(ish) market for labor.
