A sad day for 'Skins fans and non-fans alike.

We are becoming sooo politically obtuse as a society that we are now eating our own.

Amazing isn't it. They could change the emblem from an Indian to a "red skin" potato to really piss off the PC psychos.

So, after having failed to come to grips with the fact that Daniel Snyder isn't actually a subject of Harry Reid or Barack Obama personally, the thuggish bully mindset of an authoritarian leftist naturally shifts to wanton abuse of government power --

    http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2014/06/18/trademark-board-rules-against-washington-redskins-name/

Article includes this quote of the loathesome Reid -- "Daniel Snyder may be the last person in the world to realize this, but it's just a matter of time until he is forced to do the right thing and change the name."

When will Reid, or Obama, or statists in general be forced to the right thing and mind their own freaking business?

You guys don't realize what a great thing this is. Eventually they will revoke FSU's trademark as well. We can print tshirts trolling them and sell them on the internet without getting sued. Eventually they will get fed up and have to change their name. Since gators and hurricanes are already locked up, they are left with oranges and drunk tourists!

This has been tried before and it has failed. From the article Michi posted:

Very bad precedent. Not surprised though.

I would change it to Warriors but this is pure buffalo dung. Redskins can be very much considered derogatory however, how is this a US Government issue?

This is for the NFL to handle. What the "Fighting Irish" is not derogatory? Or the Celtics? And what about the NJ Devils? As a Christian can I demand this to be changed?

I am a Southern Boy BUT I don't fly the Stars and Bars because I am not into offending people. That said, its not the Government's to say that I can't.

Sure. You can demand any changes you want. But it is funny that you bring up Christians in this thread, as Christians are the most PC-requiring group of all. You can't even say 'happy holidays' without many of them going nuts.

Technically the US government isn't telling them that they can't. It's just telling them that they aren't entitled to registered trademark protection (basically the right to exclusive use of the marks in commerce) because 15 USC s. 1052(a) says that a mark may be refused registration if it "Consists of or comprises immoral, deceptive, or scandalous matter; or matter which may disparage or falsely suggest a connection with persons, living or dead, institutions, beliefs, or national symbols, or bring them into contempt, or disrepute[.]"

They can keep the name, they'll just lose some revenue if they do. We'll see what wins out: the principle of being able to have a racist team name or greed. I'm going with greed.

Anybody here ever vote for anybody at the US Patent Office? Just want to double check. To whom are these people accountable for their radical and spurious interpretations of their authority?

The executive branch, who are most likely the ones behind these radical and spurious interpretations of their authority. It smells political, especially since this has gone to court before with very similar facts.

So basically, critics are like: "Stop your PC government meddling by continuing to enforce government protections!"

Its the removal of religious phrases during the holidays that is politically correct, not the other way around!
No one is demanding an end to the term "Happy Holidays." But many demand any image/word of religion be removed.

Are you even being serious here?

This case has been in court for like 8 years now right? So, it was Bush behind this?
