I love the idea that there might be an entity to tell the NCAA "No!" I'm not too worried about the pursuit for getting paid because I don't think that would be sustainable across the board.

It's not the first time in history for college sports. Carlos Alvarez was involved in an effort to start a player's union. I think a union is a bad idea and would diminish the game. When there's an initial need for one, they always grow beyond their effectiveness. Why don't we have free agency while we're at it?

Could be the worst idea I've ever heard.

I hope every last one of them loses their eligibility. Unions are *never* a good idea.

They say they want medical coverage -- but Obamacare supposedly covers everyone, so why is that even an issue?

If they want what they say they want, I'm thinking they should drop out of college and join semi-pro football teams.

Don't like the idea of a union in college sports, but I love the idea of someone being able to say NO to the NCAA. Actually, I'd like to see everyone tell the NCAA to F--K OFF, but that would be too good to be true!

Why not? We have the Student Union. They can meet in the Reitz Union.

With all the legal battles for compensation for concussions by past NFL players, I wonder if this will spread to similar law suits by past college players against the NCAA or the colleges they played for. Chances of this would increase if there was a central players union involved. Past college players who didn't make the NFL might see this as an opportunity to cash in.
Not that I oppose the idea of unions, my first thought reading about the guys starting a players union was that it looks like a good way to make a few bucks for those running it.

College players supposedly play because they love the game and played it before college for fun. This union stuff is pure BS ! Who's going to fund this so called union? If guys don't want to play...don't play. If you can't get your degree in five years you don't deserve one. A full ride scholarship is worth a lot of money...don't accept one if you don't think it's fair. BTW who's paying for the thousands of tatoo's you see on players? They need spending money my as..

Just another step in the process of killing football. There will be no "tackle" football in 20 years.

This has the potential to destroy college football. I hope they fall flat on their faces.

    I remember it very well.
    I was for it then.
    I am for it now.

It will not destroy college football.
In fact, it will enhance it by eliminating the current plantation system and replacing it with something that will bring the game renewed dignity.

I don't see how having a third party (union) getting involved for no other reason but to profit off these young men is helpful to college football, they are better off just allowing kids to go straight to the nfl. Problem is they have to prove to the labor boards that they are employees which I Find difficult to do since they are students taking classes. If playing football in college is being a employee than so is highschool. The school makes money off of Friday night games and in some towns Friday night football is a pretty big deal.

This. I always looked forward to this game every year and those jerks killed it. I'm sure it sucks even more for the people who made those games who made their living off of it and are now out of a job.

It works for farm-league baseball. If their willing to take the chance of not panning out, then they get what they deserve...either way, the cream rises to the top.
