The old chicken and egg argument! You have to be able to do what Percy could do to be used like Percy!

As I recall, Percy's usual spot was in the slot.....not the backfield. His position was as a W.R. and return specialist.

So I guess if we are trying to find the next closet thing - we'd be looking at one of our receivers.

In the end it wouldn't matter to me - I just want a PLAY MAKER.

A guy can dream, can't he?

Seriously though - I would hope someone on our coaching staff recognizes what a player like Percy brought to the table.....and as such will continually try to get a player as groomed as possible to be that next play maker.

Remember when Showers first played how exciting it was ("Valdez is coming!") - then injuries took their toll and our offense went downhill in a hurry.

Hey ya never know.....it a whole new season with a whole new offense!

Let's not get greedy. I'll be happy with players on offense who can do one thing right: throwing, running, catching, or blocking. O.k., two things right. I'd like them to remember the snap count. O.k., three things right. I'd like them to remember the play. O.k., four things right. I'd like them to remember what color jersey the other team is wearing so they don't block each other. Holy crap, our offense is getting too complicated!

According to the coaches, Matt has some of the best hands on the team. Not sure how Showers proved he could do that exactly? 12 rushing attempts for 103 yards. 18 catches for 102 yards. Again, I like Valdez. I think he's a nice player. But I'm not sure he "proved" anything last year. Those stats are hardly proof.

Not proof that he can do it on Percy's level, which is obviously not what I'm saying. I'm saying he was used similarly to Percy (jet sweeps, catch quick screen, balls in slot, etc). Is that not what this thread is about? He had very limited attempts, but when he got the ball he looked good. Matt Jones might be able to catch and run the ball out of the backfield more traditionally, but I don't think it will resemble Percy's role in any way.

And that puts us back to the original assessment - we just don't really have someone for that role (perhaps we do by committee). Btw, Percy was asked to do more than just jet sweeps as a runner.

Not sure last season was a fair measurement of a player's ability.

We had so many injuries that our offense was not very organized...a lot of shuffling going on....huge breaches in our O-line.....somewhat out of control.

No offense to anyone, but I hate the name comparisons.

I'd like to see a healthy K.T., Debose, Showers, etc...

That said, I think we are going to be better than what many expect, outside of Gator Nation.

I'll throw this out there... is there that much of an advantage having this role if the player isn't Percy? urban talked about the mismatches it would create, but wasn't the majority of the mismatch the fact that Percy was that much better than everyone else on the field? Look what happened when we tried to use Brandon James similarly.

I think you may be on to something. In other words, we don't have someone to fill the Emmitt Smith role or the Tim Tebow role :)

We do not have anyone who has Percy's list of talents: Strength, speed, quickness, vision, pass catching ability, anticipation. No One.

So looking at those attributes.... Taylor? Lane? Showers? have the most of each in one package. KTaylor has vision and quick cuts, so, add them to Lane's power and Shower's pass catching ability and you are getting close. Because of the pass catching variable, maybe Showers is your closest candidate, but Taylor is the closest thing carrying the ball.

No one, that being said we are recruiting a few players that might be able to do some of the same things but they are not Percy.

Bailey is probably the closest thing to Percy we have on this team, but he doesn't have Percy's burst or top end. Who does?

Jones is probably the most likely to get the mix of runs and catches. He won't stress defenses deep, but should cause mismatches in coverage.

Hopefully nobody is most likely to choke a coach.

YA think? .... I just wanted to see if there was a bigger font size left.

Would suggest you just go with 7.

bazza, bud, i get you think the font is too gray but I'm not sure you need a 100pt font to combat that
