If they are going to get their back pay they should be working. If they are not going to get back pay they should stay home.

Why should anyone furloughed due to circumstances beyond their control not be paid a full salary by taxpayers then? If you work for the government in a non essential position you knew this was a possibility. Paying some to stay at home while others have to work is ridiculous. Thinking like this is why our debt is increasing every day and you will expect our kids to pay for it..

If someone in politics would actually have the sack to say this in public, they would be a national hero. I would go even further pointing out, if they are non essential, times have changed. Time to take your skills to the private market.

It's high time ALL govt workers are scrutinized and downsized.

Don't have a problem with that but to lump all of them together and say they shouldn't be paid is not sound policy.

I don't know if everyone considers all federal workers to be scumbags deserving punishment the way the extreme rightwing does.

So answer the question I posed above..why should non essential gov't workers expect a paycheck when furloughed (they knew the risks of gov't shutdown when they took the job) and private industry workers will not get one? Why should one group of workers get a paid vacation at taxpayer expense while others are forced to work for their pay?

There's a difference between a furlough done to save money. If a private company (or a govt agency) decides it needs to save money and gives everyone a non-paid furlough, that's one thing.

That wasn't what this was. This was the bosses shutting the doors because they're feuding. Why should the employees suffer every time Congress decides to act like idiots? (And don't use Rick's argument that the workers were the ones who shut it down. That's absurd.)

how is that different from a private company having funding problems and cutting hours back or laying people off? are gubmnt employees sacred cows that should never have to worry about job security?......stupid me, of course they are, they get job security, incredible benefits, and great retirement packages...the new 1%, we work for them now instead of the other way around

fwiw, my brother retired from USCG at age 48, started collecting his benefits, became a contract employee the next day with a 6 figure salary, and has been to 8 training seminars in the last 14 months. Vegas, New Orleans, Ft. Lauderdale, Denver, San Fran, and last month a full week in Hawaii to name just a few, all on the taxpayer dime. He has been to more training seminars in 14 months than I have in 14 years but of course I work in the private sector.

This is the difference between your world and mine. In my world, you take a job, you assume the risks associated with that, and you are responsible for yourself if the worst happens. In your world, it's someone else's fault and the individual bears no responsibility for taking the risk associated with said job. It explains why we differ on things like Food stamps, welfare, free phones, free health care (for some anyway) and all the other freebies associated with the entitlement crowd you hang with. It's why we have such huge debts and you have no concern that my kids (not sure you have any) and others will get stuck with a bill they did not run up or deserve. You guys on the left work so hard at rationalizing and defending things that make no sense either socially or financially that you lose sight of the predictable results to our future generations. That is the true tragedy here IMO...not some non essential federal worker not collecting a paycheck for work not done..
