Gives us time to work out the kinks.
The days of soft opponents are coming to an end.
5 turnovers and we're losing to Twinkie U today. Our offense is too limited to give any team breaks.
Nah. We schedule cupcakes at home for two reasons: (1) To inflate our number of wins. (2) We make big money playing home games.
The Canes WERE a cupcake, an inferior foe awaiting the NCAA hammer. But as usual, we played like p*****s against them. We've beaten them ONCE since 1985 and even that game in 2008 during our NC season was close until the fourth quarter. Today should have been victory No.2. Did anyone find headless chickens at the stadium? There was some serious Santeria-voodoo bad mojo on the Gators today.
There are 2.5 million reasons we schedule home cupcakes. That's why you won't see us play another road OOC game outside of Tally for the next few decades.
As for playing a patsy today, while it would have added a W to the left side of our ledger, our problems would have been masked.
Today was a huge warning shot across the bow (to use an old metaphor) and I'd rather see our staff get this message early enough in the year to have a chance to possibly fix it.
Would we work on our kinks? Or would be super vanilla and just run up the middle and throw screens all game?
Probably. But we could have gotten all the turnovers out of our system.
At least we lost to a respectable opponent. If we turned the ball over 5 times against Citadel, Southwestern Alaska State or the usual patsy we play early in the season, we might be sitting here mourning the greatest upset in modern sports history.
Well, thing of it is, give credit to UM. They didn't schedule a cupcake for their 2nd. game. They kept focused, played hard.
